Andrew Maxwell is both a Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres fan, but he picks Detroit whenever they play each other.

That’s right, he’s a man for the teams of Michigan through and through and looks up to a signal caller who played for the rival Michigan Wolverines.

“I watch a lot of (Tom) Brady film, watch a lot of Aaron Rodgers film, because their success is undeniable and they must be doing something right. Brady as far as mechanics is top of the class. I try to tailor my game a little more to them,” Maxwell said at Big Ten media day.

Maxwell has a lot of potential, but very little experience. The junior from Midland, Michigan was listed in the top 20 QBs by Scout.com when he was being recruited; ranked the 9th best pro-style/drop back quarterback.

But in two years, he’s only thrown 51 passes, completing 29 of them, for 294 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 57% completion.

So who would you compare him to?

“Our SID said when he saw my high school film, and I’m not saying I am Joe Montana but he said that I reminded him of a young Joe Montana, not what I said. His words, not my words,” Maxwell said.

Obviously, he’s got a long way to go to even be remotely compared to Joe Montana. And he’s got a lot of big shoes to fill. Kirk Cousins broke all the major school passing records before he was taken in the NFL Draft. Cousins is arguably the best passer in school history. What did Maxwell learn from him?

“A lot of things, on the field, preparation, just how much work it really takes to make sure you leave no stone unturned and are ready to play,” Maxwell told me during our exclusive interview.

Other QBs Maxwell looks up to and models his game on?

“I got a couple I like, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Jay Cutler, Carson Palmer, all guys I respect and admire.”
