Like one of his Sunday rounds at the US Open, Phil Mickelson’s aspirations to buy a piece of his hometown San Diego Padres have fallen apart. The Associated Press reported that Mickelson decided he couldn’t “match the level of commitment” shown by the O’Malley and Seidler families, who became approximately the 500th different group of people to buy the team since the death of Ray Kroc. The two families left a spot open for Mickelson following their $800 million purchase of the franchise earlier this year. At halftime of the Chargers-Broncos game on Oct. 15, he was quoted saying “It looks pretty promising and hopefully here in the next few days we’ll have something to announce. I think we’re getting it worked out.” Apparently, those talks were as promising as the 24-0 lead blown by the Chargers in that very game. Though it would have been intriguing to see someone with Lefty’s star power involved with the team — face it, he’s more famous than anyone actually on the roster right now — I’m sure Padres fans would take wins over celebrity notoriety.
