Josh Freeman will be looking up and over his shoulder during the preseason. That’s because there’s a 6-foot-7 rookie gunning for the Tampa Bay quarterback’s job. And from what Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano has to say, Mike Glennon has a chance to take Freeman’s job. Schiano told National Football Post that Glennon “can play quickly” if the Buccaneers need him. “But our situation will be only if he’s needed,” Schiano said. “Or if he wins the job. Look, I’m not against that. We have a starting quarterback. It’s not like we’re looking to find a starter. But competition is competition. Mike Glennon is a fierce competitor. I knew that when he was coming out of high school. Now being able to work with him a little, you can see it on the practice field.” When Schiano was still head coach of Rutgers, he attempted to recruit Glennon. Glennon wanted to play in the ACC, not the Big East, so the tall signal caller went to NC State. Glennon was the Wolfpack quarterback that pushed Russell Wilson out to Wisconsin. Glennon was the third quarterback chosen in the 2013 NFL draft. He went No. 73 overall, sandwiched between higher-profile names, Geno Smith and Matt Barkley. Freeman’s rookie deal runs out after this season. Tampa Bay has reportedly not approached Freeman to talk about a new deal. Last month there were reports that Schiano is not “on board” with Freeman as the future of the team. The Bucs went 7-9 last season under Freeman. The fifth-year quarterback has compiled a 24-32 record since going No. 17 overall in 2009. He threw for 4,065 yards, 27 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2012, but completed just 54.8 percent of his passes. Photo via Facebook/Tampa Bay Times – Sports
