--Minnesota Twins outfielder Denard Span was traded to the Washington Nationals on Thursday for pitching prospect Alex Meyer. Span, a five-year veteran who has spent his career with the Twins, hit .283 last season with four homers, 41 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. He is a .284 career hitter who has had his last two seasons cut short by injuries. He is expected to take over center field for the Nationals, moving Bryce Harper to either left or right field. That will leave Adam LaRoche, who is currently a free agent, and Michael Morse fighting for the other outfield spot. Span, who has a .357 career on-base percentage, is signed for the next two seasons and has a $9 million team option for 2015. The 6-foot-9 Meyer was a first-round draft pick in 2011. The 22-year-old right-hander had a 10-6 record with a 2.86 ERA combined with low-Class A Hagerstown and high-Class A Potomac.---The New York Yankees and closer Mariano Rivera are close to a contract for the 2013 season, according to ESPN.com. The sides have agreed on the parameters of a one-year deal that will likely pay Rivera a guaranteed $11 million to 12 million and include incentives that could make the total worth $15 million, the ESPN.com report said. Rivera, 43, pitched in nine games last season before tearing his ACL in May. The right-hander is the all-time saves leader with 608 saves.---Free-agent infielder Mike Fontenot signed a minor-league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to a Baseball America report. Fontenot, 32, batted .289 in 105 plate appearances for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012.---The Oakland A's signed Scott Moore to a minor-league, according to MLB.com. Moore, 29, appeared in 72 games for the Houston Astros in 2012, playing first base, second base, third base and both corner outfield positions. He batted .259 with nine home runs in 228 plate appearances.---The Phillies have "put the brakes" on a deal that would've brought reliever Wilton Lopez to Philadelphia, according to a CSNPhilly.com report. The web site said Lopez had come to Philadelphia for a physical on Wednesday, though it wasn't clear whether there was anything physically wrong with the pitcher. On Wednesday, multiple reports said the Phillies had acquired Lopez for minor leaguers. He has pitched at least 65 innings in each of the past three seasons without finishing with an ERA north of 3.00.
