How will the New York Jets ever survive without Fireman Ed? Last season, Fireman Ed — aka Ed Anzalone — stepped down from his position as Jets superfan because of the losing culture and drama surrounding the team and its fans. The problem (if you want to call it that) is that Fireman Ed has been leading the famous J-E-T-S chant since 1986.

As a result of Ed’s retirement, the team has to figure out a way to keep the chant alive. Fear not, Jets fans — included in your 2013 season ticket package are written instructions for how the J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets! chant is going continue. As a Jets fan named Jason P. who goes by the Twitter handle @Jayyyson pointed out on Wednesday (via the NY Daily News), the page is titled “The J-E-T-S chant is in your hands!”

“In 2013, we are launching an all-new J-E-T-S chant tradition,” a corresponding blurb reads. “As a first step, please find your section on the map for your letter on gameday. Call your Jets Relations Representative to find out more at 800-469-JETS (5387) and start practicing your loudest J-E-T-S chant!”

In other words, every section of the stadium is assigned to one of the four letters. There is nothing cornier than written instructions on how to cheer. The Dallas Cowboys tried it last year and their fans ended up booing.

The concept of Fireman Ed was kind of lame in itself, but at least the J-E-T-S chant was organic. If the fans want to keep it alive, they’re better off having someone go stand where Ed used to stand in Section 134 and take over for him. Or, just wait for Ed to make a dramatic return to his old role when he gets a craving for some more attention. What, you really think that’s not going to happen?

No matter where you stand on some of the social issues that define the United States today, the right to an opinion and belief is paramount in an open society. And how does their active participation in some of the most...
