In just three days, Sam Gordon went from being a nine-year-old who happened to dominate her boys’ youth football league, to receiving national recognition for her impressive skills. LBS was so curious about the young girl that we had to ask her father some questions. Brent Gordon is Sam’s father, and he is the one who uploaded the highlight video of his daughter to YouTube on Monday. Brent confirmed that Sam is nine years old, not eight like some outlets reported. Sam played for the Herriman Mustangs in the Gremlin age group of the Ute Conference in Utah. Her team went 6-5, and they lost twice to the same team — once in the regular season and another time in the playoffs. “Before the season started I had a feeling that Sam would do something special and I wanted to capture that for her to remember the rest of her life since I didn’t think she’d play football for more than a couple of years. I made sure every game was recorded. I wanted to share the video with her friends and family and other supporters. I had no idea it would have such a big response,” Brent Gordon told Larry Brown Sports over email. Brent says that “Sam is excited that people enjoy watching her play.” We asked Brent what the reception was from opposing players and parents. What did they think of playing against a girl? “At the start of the season, opposing players’ parents thought she was cute until she scored on them. The league is very competitive and the players, coaches, and parents really want to win. I heard many parents throughout the season yell out to their kids to play harder so they don’t lose to a girl. I have no doubt that boys played harder against Sam because they didn’t want to lose to a girl,” Brent says. “After the first few games teams started to game plan for her and a number of coaches admitted to me after the games that their team focused on stopping Sam all week long during practices. Sam’s coach then made some adjustments and her team won four in a row to end the regular season.” Gordon recognized that football wouldn’t be a sport Sam plays long-term. He says she also is a soccer player. “Sam will shift from football to soccer in the fall after a couple of years. Soccer isn’t as intense as football at this age and I think some skills and experiences playing football will help her with other sports. Her football team practiced two hours a day six days a week for the five weeks leading up to the start of the season and then three nights a week and a game on Saturday once the season started.” If Sam is as good at soccer as she is at football — and her quickness and footwork probably translates well to the sport — then it wouldn’t be surprising to see her make some noise on the pitch. Below is her football highlight video in case you haven’t seen it:

  • What an inspiring girl. I watched the video and was speachless !

Good for you Sam and all the best for your future !!
  • Good job Dad, knowing that she will need to move on later!! Two reasons: 1. she will get an interest in boys and she will not then want to be "one of the boys." 2. at about 15 they will be too fast and strong for her.
  • Somehow there wasnt one Black kid throughout the video chasing her. That means this isnt legitimate.
  • Let's not bring the "race thing" into this. No matter who you are, you have to give this little girl her props!!!
  • Oh yes. I know we're supposed to join hands, sing Kumbayah and then applaud any instance where a women does something/anything - especially where it exceeds the "guys". Because that's what it's all about - denigrating the guys and making them look either silly or inept in order to empower the ladies. Good Lord girls (and some of you daddies) get over it! So she's 9 and competes? Okay - hand her the ball when she's 14, 15, 18, 22 and let her run roughshod through the guys who are 14, 15, 18, 22 with no holds barred. Full force and full contact. So until then can we just try to frame this silliness in some level of perspective and context.
  • WOW... did a little girl beat you up when you were younger? Does one still beat you up now!?! You need to forgive and forget that girl bully in your life, and move on!!!
  • You are such a mental *****! So are anyone of you who take this to a racial, sexest or any tone other than a cute story about a girl who exceeded what everyone thought of her.
  • Jeez, get a life!!
  • Truth, what are you saying? that only black kids are fast? Really!?!?!? this is a white GIRL.
  • I'm black and I'm giving that little girl all the props she deserves....she's got jets!
Female or not she-is-no-joke totin' that football and she can "stick" too...that's amazing!
  • You go Sam! And then go some more!

You've got speed, you've got moves, and you've got heart. The people who say otherwise have none of that.

When you take all of that to the pitch (soccer field for the rest of you) you will be incredible. And BTW, soccer is the REAL football that takes skill, creativity, and endurance that is far more impressive than the American game.
  • That Girl is Fast! and very thoughtful from her picture. ...
way to go Sam....never give in to those who tell you 'girls
can't do that'....you already excel! and are just getting
    started!
  • First there were all the good comments about what an amazing player this little girl is. Then all the little kids came on and there were all kinds of negative comments. If this kid goes on to play as a teen or adult fine if not still fine. That is her perogative. I wish her all the luck in the world either way.
  • I too joined this site just to respond. We live in N.Indiana about 12 miles from Notre Dame.I have a nine yr old son who played his first year in a youth league and turned out to be a much better player than even I though he would be.And believe me it makes my heart swell w/pride to watch him play.AS Im sure it does this girls parents. You people who doubt this child and her abilities to play this game should be slapped. These are kids out there having fun, trying to be like their idols in the sport. So to all you A Holes give it a rest and enjoy it because your making it obvios to everyone even your own kids that your jealous or that you or your own kids can't play the game.

Dekker changes his Twitter to painful memory

Sam Dekker and the Wisconsin Badgers are back in the Final Four again in 2015, and somehow, they’ll be playing the same squad they did in 2014 – Kentucky. Last year’s contest went to the Wildcats, 74-73, after Aaron Harrison hit a game-clinching 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds to play. This year, Dekker is using how things ended in Arlington, Texas, as motivation. Dekker has changed...

Five best quarterback situations in the NFL

There won’t be too much of an argument about the top-five quarterbacks in the NFL. In no order, it’s obvious Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck and Drew Brees fall somewhere in that top five. This doesn’t mean the five teams these star signal callers suit up for have the best quarterback situations in the NFL. You have to take into account backup quarterbacks...

Ohio State fans – you may want to bookmark this page for future use. Earlier this week, Eleven Warriors posted a photo of a new Michigan-themed fire hydrant that had been installed outside Ohio State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Why, you ask, does it exist? For dogs to urinate on, of course. Tuesday night, The Columbus Dispatch released a video of the school’s executive...

Bengals troll Browns with April Fools’ Day joke

April Fools’ Day is the time news aggregators dread most. It’s hard to discern what’s real and what’s fake.
