It's the Pac 12 Tournament and Bill Walton is ending the year with a bang.  The redhead has had a glorious return to the broadcast booth working games for the Pac 12 Network and ESPN this year after being sidelined due to health reasons.  Walton was in rare form today, even by his Grateful Dead infused high standards, so much so that the Pac 12 actually sent a press release with some of his best quotes from the early action.  But those were nothing compared to what Walton said coming out of commercial with the Pac 12 mascots coming out of a limousine.  It was worthy of a double take, a spit take, and any other _____ take you could muster.  Bill Walton made a joke about being in the limosuine with ESPN's shiny new NFL analyst Ray Lewis, who just happens to have a bit of history with limos: "I was way in the back with Ray Lewis and it was unbelievable how much fun, oh my gosh, how many people were in there!" Dave Pasch's deadpan reaction may be the perfect complement to the clip. If Bill Simmons can get kicked off Twitter for a few days for a tepid critique of Skip Bayless, what's going to happen to Walton for that punchline about Ray Lewis?  Better get the #FreeWalton hashtag ready as a preemptive strike. UPDATE: And fittingly enough, Walton also made a Bill Simmons joke after Dave Pasch suggested he'd get in trouble for only hocking Southwest Airlines.  Again, Pasch plays his role as the straight man excellently.  I'll have to check the record books, but I think Bill Walton may have just put together the greatest half in Awful Announcing history. We'll provide updates throughout the evening to see if Walton keeps this performance up.  Of course, he could also be escorted out of Las Vegas by ESPN security at any moment.

  • Well, Walton made no shooting jokes or murder jokes... so I do not see why it is a big deal.

The fact that the Sports Media (aka ESPN) has worked so hard to turn a man who assisted in a murder into some kind of hero and now hired him as an analyst just continues a long line of ESPN giving criminals (Bruce Pearl, e.g.) jobs. And yet, they go out of their way to tear down others for minor BS.

Man, the modern money-based media sucks. As does ESPN.

RUMORS & GOSSIP

Denver Nuggets fire Brian Shaw

In a less-than-surprising move, the Denver Nuggets have fired head coach Brian Shaw. The team is currently 20-39 on the season and simply hasn’t played inspired basketball this season. That came to a head recently when it was reported that players are breaking team huddles with a countdown to the end of the season. Definitely not a good sign. Including this season, Shaw was a...

Hamels trade talk motivating Red Sox pitching staff

Cole Hamels this, Cole Hamels that. It’s impossible to bring up the Boston Red Sox in spring training without Hamels’ name coming up.   The Red Sox’s lack of a starting pitcher who is considered a true ace has been a major storyline in Fort Myers, Fla., where the Red Sox opened their exhibition schedule Tuesday. Rick Porcello, Clay Buchholz, Joe Kelly, Wade...

Spiller: EJ Manuel learned not to be 'buddy buddy' with everyone

C.J. Spiller believes that one of EJ Manuel’s problems thus far in the NFL has been that he is too nice of a guy. Spiller, who is set to become a free agent and may not return to the Buffalo Bills, said during an interview with NFL Network’s NFL AM on Tuesday that Manuel had...Read More

Ravens settle grievance, pay Ray Rice $1.6 million

After the Baltimore Ravens released running back Ray Rice this past season, the former second-round pick made it clear that he wasn’t happy about the actions of his former organization. Claiming that he was unfairly released following his domestic violence case, Rice filed a grievance against the Ravens, who gave the former Pro Bowler $1.688 million to settle. Some might be unhappy...

A-Rod goes 0-2 against Yankees pitching machine 'Iron Mike'

Alex Rodriguez went up against a pitching machine — not against a live-armed pitcher — during Monday’s “live game” action, but the results for the New York Yankees slugger still were underwhelming after he went 0-for-2 in a showdown against a pitching machine intimidatingly named “Iron Mike.” While his official debut on the field in...Read More The post Alex Rodriguez...

J.J. Redick was ejected during the final two minutes of the Los Angeles’ Clippers win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Ohio native Brian Hartline to visit Browns today

Josh Alper at PFT reported this morning that Canton native and former Buckeye Brian Hartline is visiting with the Browns today. The 2009 fourth round draft choice of Miami had a rough year for the Dolphins where he saw his role reduced in their offense and ended up with a mere 39 receptions for 474 yards and 2 touchdowns. However, that one rough year followed 2 fantastic seasons...

Report: Jets owner urging team to pursue Darrelle Revis

Woody Johnson appears to have a No. 1 offseason target in mind.   The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that the New York Jets owner has had discussions with general manager Mike Maccagnan about making a push for possible free-agent-to-be Darrelle Revis. Revis technically is still under contract with the New England Patriots, who hold a $20 million option for the 2015 season...
