Race Review Online:
After officially being released from Michael Waltrip Racing after this season earlier this week, Martin Truex Jr. didn’t waste any time finding a new home.
MWR officials announced on Tuesday that they’d scale back to two full-time teams in 2014 with Clint Bowyer and Brian Vickers driving for them. Truex and his crew chief would be allowed to look for other opportunities.
As I reported that day, Furniture Row Racing would be the most logical fit for Truex. There was really no other ride out there with an opening as rides were filling up fast.
The issue with him searching for a ride this late in the season is sponsors would be hard to find and rides wouldn’t be there. The only competitive one left was the seat at FRR replacing Kurt Busch.
That’s exactly what happened.
Reports filtered out on Thursday and despite no official word from FRR and Truex, several sources have said Truex and FRR have agreed to a deal and will announce it next Tuesday. This could be a very good marriage between the two as Truex has the capabilities to give this team a return trip to the Chase in 2014.
FRR is the only single car team located away from North Carolina and has been a midpack car until Regan Smith took them to victory lane at Darlington a few years ago. The team was able to sign Busch for this season and he’s taken them from inconsistent to a title contender. Now, this car is a valid seat and Truex will arrive to keep the momentum going next season.
That pretty much secures every ride next year unless a new team is started.
