When it comes to Notre Dame football, I’ve certainly had my moments while covering the team. I’ve reported a lot of things that other journalists didn’t, or wouldn’t. There was 2010 Media Day, when I asked Brian Kelly about how Michael Floyd will mesh with him as he took over the reins from Charlie Wes. And Kelly’s answer led every column in the nation covering that Notre Dame Football Media Day. Bear in mind, this was before Michael Floyd was kicked off the team; and later reinstated. I think I first “broke” the story about ND’s star NG being Twitter BFF with an adult film star too. My coverage of the Declan Sullivan and Lizzy Seeberg tragedies was by far the most detailed among the hundreds of websites that comprise the Fox Sports and Yardbarker Network. And I’m the only one who has said on record some crucial details regarding the Everett Golson dismissal. However, it doesn’t mean that everything I report on Notre Dame is negative. It’s just that those are the stories YOU remember the most. It’s only a small fraction of my Notre Dame football work. It’s kind of like the achievements of the late, great Tupac Shakur. Everyone remembers that song where he flew off the handle; screaming, threatening and swearing at Biggee Smalls and all of Bad Boy Entertainment. That’s iconic. However, you must remember Pac’s odes to single mothers and the sensitive song he dedicated to his own mother; the uplifting art that Shakur produced. Yes, I did just compare myself to 2pac. Deal with it. I write extensively about the Notre Dame QB position battles and their illustrious history; especially the Notre Dame football representation in the NFL Draft every year. This work gets overlooked. Just like at Chicago Now, the first thing people associate with my work is when I went Jimmy B. Rabbit Smith on the Blackhawks front office with the Susannah Collins thing and/or my scathing critiques of other journalists. However, that’s only a small fraction of what I do there. I report on ex-NFL players helping the community and starting businesses after their playing days are over. I interview broadcasters and writers, and highlight the Horatio Alger stories of how they broke into the business. Hopefully, this motivates others to reach the same heights that they did. People forget about the positive stuff. You need to remember it. And here’s more uplifting, positive news. I’m going to be a regular guest analyst on 95.7 The Fan, a 24 hr sports talk radio station.I’ll be on “Ragz & the Bartender” morning show weekly, perhaps even bi-weekly. It’s Michiana’s home for broadcasts of the Bulls, Bears and White Sox. Starting July 25th, I’m going to be their Chicago Bears expert. I’ll probably cover the Big Ten (Northwestern and Illinois) and Notre Dame football too. It is South Bend, so I’ll probably be a part of the ND football pregame shows once in awhile too. College football is my favorite sport and it is college football’s most visible and historical program. Obviously, I’m very excited. And some Chicago Bulls discussion once NBA basketball season gets here. However, the focus will be the Chicago Bears first and foremost. Craig Williams breaks it down: “95.7 The Fan is South Bend’s ONLY 24 hr Sports station. We “Ragz & the Bartender”, have had Peggy Kusinski, Mike North, Len Kasper, Chuck Swirsky, Jarrett Payton, Bruce Miles all as regular guests from the Chicago area. We cover local sports, including, of course, Notre Dame like no other and don’t shy away from the “unpopular” view to being what we feel is unbiased, thought-provoking radio our listeners are used to and deserve. Our buddy, Paul Banks, fits right into that with articles and commentary that keep our followers wanting more.” I begin on the morning of Big Ten football media day, Thursday July 25th. From there on, I’ll be on every Friday morning, and then possibly every Friday and Monday once the season starts. Here’s a couple videos I shot on the field at ND Stadium after covering a Notre Dame football game. Follow 95.7 on Twitter Ragz on Twitter Craig the Bartender on Twitter Paul M. Banks is the owner of The Sports Bank.net, an affiliate of Fox Sports. An analyst for 95.7 The Fan, he also writes on Chicago sports media for Chicago Now.
