The hiring of Oregon head coach Chip Kelly came as quite a surprise. Kelly stated that he was going to remain at Oregon and suddenly, without warning, the Philadelphia Eagles announced his hiring as the team’s head coach. Now comes an even more surprising potential hire for the Eagles organization. Former Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur as the team’s offensive coordinator. This seems to be a very off fit between Kelly and Shurmur. Kelly was obviously hired in part for his high powered, high octane offense. Shurmur has a history in Philadelphia, most recently between 2002-2008 as the team’s quarterbacks coach under Andy Reid. Shurmur runs a version of the West Coast offense, which is a different offensive scheme than Kelly employed at Oregon. Kelly runs a version of the spread that utilizes mobile quarterbacks with a lot of running plays.
