The Outside Corner:
St. Louis Cardinals
The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St Louis Cardinals 7-1 in Game 2 of their NLDS matchup to even the series at one game each.
Pirates rookie Gerrit Cole made his first career playoff start on Friday, and he dominated a veteran lineup in St Louis. In his six innings of work, Cole allowed one run on two hits, striking out five and walking one. Aside from a Carlos Beltran first inning double and Yadier Molina fifth inning solo homer, Cole was untouchable. He threw just 86 pitches in his six innings of work, but 22 of those came in the sixth, leading to Clint Hurdle giving him the hook after the frame.
Lance Lynn wasn't sharp for the Cardinals by any stretch of the imagination. In 4 1/3 innings, Lynn threw 83 pitches, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out six. But Lynn got himself in trouble in the second, third, and fifth innings, and that led to his undoing. In the second, Pedro Alvarez doubled with one out. After striking out Russell Martin, Lyn...

Pittsburgh Pirates rookie hurler Gerrit Cole will start Game 2 of the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The rookie hurler posted a 3.22 ERA in 117.1 innings, with a 21.3% strikeout rate and a 6.0% walk rate. His FIP of 2.91 was even with teammate Francisco Liriano and just a shade behind A.J. Burnett.

Is there a pitcher you'd rather have on the mound for the Pirates in a near must-win situation than Gerrit Cole? Cole has been consistent since the day he was called up in June, and he was dominant in September. The stats have been run through a million times in the last week, but in September Cole made five starts and the Pirates won all five. He threw 34 innings and held opponents...

ST. LOUIS -- Beware, Cardinals. That might have been your first encounter with Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole but you can be sure it wont be the last.
One of the games prized pitching prospects, Cole has been in the majors for only a few months but the just-turned 23-year-old figures to have a long future in the NL Central. The Cardinals, however, might not have to wait til next...

ST. LOUIS -- All together now: It was only one game.
Keep going: The Pirates (or any Game 1 losers) are a resilient bunch.
"We've lost a few games like this this year," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said following Thursday's 9-1 defeat, during which his team had almost as many errors (three) as hits (four). "What we've been good at is just moving on....

The way Pirates manager Clint Hurdle sees it rookie right-hander Gerrit Cole is an old-school guy.
That's why Hurdle was not worried about putting the 23-year-old newbie on the mound Friday a day after the St. Louis Cardinals won the first game of the best-of-five National League Division Series.
“The fact we're one (game) down — Cole is kind of old-school this way...
Pirates at Cardinals — Cardinals lead series 1-0
1:00 PM–Busch Stadium, St. Louis
Yesterday was a disaster, but the Pirates will be in a pretty good spot if they win today. Bringing the series back to PNC Park, where the crowd is sure to be insane again, with Liriano for Game 3, and home field advantage for a best-of-three…that would be just fine...
The Bucs are coming home after a split on the road, and despite Thursday’s disaster, they’re back in great shape after a victory Friday that was the polar opposite of Game 1. After an off day Saturday, the Bucs will have the opportunity to win this series without going back to St. Louis – it’s now a best-of-three and they have home field. Francisco Liriano will take the hill...
Lots of people would probably say, “Don’t worry about that now, stop looking ahead” , or something of that nature. Screw them though, that’s why I get paid the big bucks. Yesterday Gerrit Cole was once again a stopper. A big game pitcher. He likely could have gone even deeper into the game to be…
There are a lot of highlights from this 2013 regular season, but some of the games that stand out from the regular season for me are the ones that I dubbed "reminder games" in my head. The reminder games were the ones where Pirates would come out and put together a complete and solid win after a bad loss or a losing streak. Those wins always felt huge, just because they...
Keep it simple.
Sometimes it's hard in baseball, with all the permutations in game coupled with all the way to analyze it afterwards.
But the second game in the Pirates vs Cardinals NLDS can be summed up in one decision:
Top of the 2nd, Mike Matheny chooses to intentionally walk Jordy Mercer, the 8th place hitter, to face P Gerrit Cole.
1. Why start Lance Lynn...
