In news that isn’t likely to be fantasy relevant – at least not in the short term – it is worth pointing out that Robert Meachem has found his way back to New Orleans. The move made sense, given the lack of proven options at the third wide receiver position following Joe Morgan’s injury and Meachem’s history of production while with the team, it seemed only a matter of time that he would reunite with Drew Brees and his former teammates. Meachem, though, returns to New Orleans under considerably different circumstances than when he left. A sought after free agent who signed a big money deal with the San Diego Chargers now finds himself signing with the Saints as an after thought, a player who San Diego more or less paid to go away when cut down day came. It is hard to say whether his disappearing act in San Diego was a result of the change in teams, other contextual factors or a straight up erosion of his skills. The truth lies somewhere in between, but, what remains certain is that Meachem doesn’t look as fast on tape as he once did. At 29, and coming off a terrible season in San Diego lets not get over excited about Meachem’s immediate prospects. For starters, the Saints have Kenny Stills on the roster – a player, with his sub 4.4 speed is a true fit for Sean Payton’s 3rd receiver in the Saints bombs-away passing game – and beyond that Meachem just arrived in town. For now, just add the name to the nether-regions of your fantasy radar. Should he come into an unforeseen number of targets and demonstrate the speed that he has lacked since leaving the quick track of the Superdome, then he is worth a look, but until that time, let’s not get any ideas.Bear in mind: his best fantasy season came in 2009 where he was the 22nd ranked receiver in the virtual game. Since then, Meachem hasn’t sniffed the top 40 and there is little reason to expect him to in 2013.
