After his team slipped by Rhode Island 69-58 at the Hall of Fame Tip Off Classic at Mohegan Sun, Ohio State coach Thad Matta took to the podium to answer the normal battery of questions about the game. Then, one hit him from left field. “Coach, did you hear that Maryland and Rutgers may be headed to the Big Ten,” someone asked. “No, I had no idea,” Matta said, clearly surprised. To quote the a line from the timeless movie Christmas Vacation, Matta probably wouldn’t have been more surprised unless he’d woken up with his head sewn to the carpet. Matta eventually composed himself. “I had no idea,” he said. “Maryland to the Big Ten.  And who else, Rutgers… I’m not even sure of what conference they play in,” he quipped. “I know Maryland’s in the ACC,” Matta continued. ” As far as Maryland to the Big Ten, if we went through the conferences and all of what has gone on, I think considering  where some teams have landed (alluding to Boise State and SDSU in the Big East), Maryland to the Big Ten can actually make sense.” Matta further addressed how just prior to Nebraska jumping to the Big Ten, he was unaware — implying he just keeps his head down and plays whatever squad is next on the schedule. Up next for the Buckeyes will be either Seton Hall or Washington tomorrow from Mohegan Sun.  Who knows what tomorrow may hold for the Big Ten, but a light moment handled well by one of the Big Ten’s veteran coaches.
