The Sean O’Sullivan experiment may be over as the Padres announced Monday afternoon that the club has decided to designate the 25-year old right hander for assignment. O’Sullivan’s departure from the roster was corresponded with the recall of RHP Brad Boxberger; with O’Sullivan being DFA’d, the Padres now have only 39 active members on their official 40-man roster. O’Sullivan had pitched decently well in game he had started this season, surrendering only 4 earned runs over 17.1 innings (2.07 ERA when starting). Pitching in relief was a different story, however, giving up 6 earned runs over 7.2 innings (7.04 ERA in relief). Overall, O’Sullivan posted a 0-2 record with a combined 3.96 ERA in 7 games this season with 25 innings pitched. The Padres picked O’Sullivan up as a free agent in the offseason where he was signed to a major league contract; he sports a lifetime 5.89 ERA over four major league seasons.
