WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Walla Walla Sweets continue to add depth to their roster with the addition of UC Irvine freshmen outfielders, Kris Paulino and Ryan Cooper. The two players have signed contracts to play in Walla Walla next summer during the 2012 season of West Coast League baseball.

Ryan Cooper, the 5-foot 11-inch, 175-pound freshman, is a native of Yorba Linda, California and a graduate of Esperanza High School. As a senior he was selected 2011 Century League Most Valuable Player and received all-county first-team honors. During his senior season he hit .431 with 26 RBI, 11 doubles, four triples, and two homeruns. He set school single-season records with 116 at-bats, 50 hits, and 28 stolen bases. He was selected to the Max Preps All-State second-team and helped his team advance to the CIF Division I finals.

“Ryan and Kris come from a program that we have the utmost respect and admiration for in UC Irvine,” said Sweets’ general manager Zachary Fraser. “Ryan will add tremendous speed to an already athletic group of outfielders.”

Kris Paulino, is a graduate of Tesoro High School and a native of Ladera Ranch, California. As a junior in high school, the 6-foot, 180-pound outfielder batted .419 with 9 doubles, three triples, and one home run. He went on to collect All-South Coast League first-team honors for his junior season. In 94 at-bats as a senior, Paulino had 16 RBI, two doubles, one triple, and five home runs.

“Kris is another solid athlete who can run,” added Sweets’ manager J.C. Biagi. “We anticipate him in somewhat of a utility role, seeing time in both the infield and outfield.”

The Sweets open the 2012 season on June 1 against the Corvallis Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. The UC Irvine Anteaters will open the season on February 17 with a tournament in Houston, Texas.
