When Pedro Alvarez made the All-Star team, it seemed obvious that he’d be a part of the Home Run Derby. It’s perfect for Pedro. Hitting homers is what he does. He’s third in the NL with 22 – several of them being tape measure shots. He’s from New York, and the Mets are hosting the festivities. It made perfect sense. David Wright apparently didn’t think so, though. The Mets’ 3B, who has the honor of choosing his three NL teammates for the Derby, went with Carlos Gonzalez, Bryce Harper, and Michael Cuddyer. Gonzalez is certainly a reasonable choice – he leads the league in bombs. Harper only has 13 but has missed over 30 games and is a guy people will tune in to see. Cuddyer, though, is a real head-scratcher. He’s having a good year but has just 15 homers and plays in Coors Field. He already has a teammate in the contest and isn’t exactly a guy anyone will be itching to watch. Wright basically said that he’s good friends with Cuddyer and picked him for that reason. It’s stupid to break down Home Run Derby selections in depth, because the Home Run Derby means nothing. I just think a lot of Pirate fans are rightfully disappointed because they were looking forward to seeing Pedro blast some monstrous bombs (plus seeing him get some nice recognition and maybe introduce himself to more of a national audience). Frankly, I was a heck of a lot more excited to see Pedro in the Derby than in the game itself – this event is basically made for him (much more so than Andrew McCutchen last year or Jason Bay a few years back), and he deserves to be there this year. Alas, it won’t happen because Wright went with his buddy and the popular Harper instead–I’m guessing he’ll hear about that when he comes to town this weekend.  (Wright also left out Philadelphia’s Domonic Brown, who is second in the NL with 23 homers.) I guess Pedro being part of the contest wasn’t the slam dunk that we figured it would be…but I suppose he’ll get to a Derby eventually. At least A.J. Burnett turned Pedro’s snub into a good laugh with his auto-correct woes: Will somebody explain to me how the hell Pedro Alveras is not in the Homerun Derby? Does the National League not wanna win? #ElToro — AJ Burnett (@wudeydo34) July 8, 2013 My bad. Haha. Alveras! #autocorrectsucks — AJ Burnett (@wudeydo34) July 8, 2013 Ok,.. Here we go,…Alveraz! #cleanitup34 — AJ Burnett (@wudeydo34) July 8, 2013 I quit! ………EL TORO! — AJ Burnett (@wudeydo34) July 8, 2013
