After a fairly improbable win last night that required a Johnny Cueto injury and a million or so Reds left on base, the Pirates have a chance to sweep the Reds this afternoon. They're going to have to do it with a pitcher making his big league debut, as Phil Irwin's been called up to make Wandy Rodriguez's start as Wandy recovers from his hamstring injury. I talked about Irwin a bit before he tailed off at the end of spring training; he's pitched his way into being a fringe prospect, but for now his ceiling is probably approximately in the Jeff Karstens range. He doesn't throw his fastball very hard but he can put it where he needs it to go and he supplements it with a pretty ridiculous curveball that can occasionally make batters look stupid and that earned him his nickname "Filthy Phil."  Now, I want you to think about all of the times that the Pirates have faced lightly considered young pitchers and come away looking stupid, simply because they d...

Phil Irwin to start tomorrow

According to Kristy Robinson and Rob Biertempfel, Phil Irwin will get the call to the majors to make his major league debut tomorrow afternoon against the Reds. He will replace Wandy Rodriguez, who will miss the start due to his strained left hamstring. Irwin posted very strong numbers in the minors last season (mostly in Altoona). The big righty was promoted to Indy at the end of...

Alex Presley joins the team

The #Pirates option RHP Phil Irwin to AAA Indianapolis and recall OF Alex Presley. — Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 15, 2013 As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the...

Johnny Cueto leaves game early due to injury

The injury bug continues to bite hard around baseball this week as Reds ace Johnny Cueto was forced to leave Saturday's game against the Pirates with an apparent injury to his throwing arm. The injury seemed to have occurred in the fifth inning after Cueto delivered a strike out pitch to Pirates third basemen Pedro Alvarez. Cueto could be seen grimacing immediately following...

Game 12 Preview: Pirates vs. Reds

Reds (5-6) at Pirates (5-6) 1:35 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs go for a sweep of the Reds this afternoon, which would obviously be awesome. They’ve won 4 of 5 while Cincinnati has lost 4 in a row, so momentum is on the Bucs’ side for sure. They may need it today with a tough matchup on the mound, but hey, they beat Cueto last night (well, kinda)...

Reds RHP Cueto leaves with injured triceps in 5th

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto left with strained right triceps in the fifth inning of Saturday night's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. After striking out Pedro Alvarez to start the inning, Cueto threw a first-pitch strike to Travis Snider then began shaking his right arm. A Reds trainer visited Cueto on the mound, briefly massaged his upper arm and both then...

Johnny Cueto Leaves Game As Cincinnati Reds Hold Breath

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Johnny Cueto was removed from Saturday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after suffering an injury that caused pain in his right triceps. While the removal from the game was precautionary, he will be re-evaluated Sunday to see the actual extent of the injury. Once we know that, the time table for his return will be better known. Until then the...

Cueto lands on DL with back strain

The Cincinnati Reds have lost top starter Johnny Cueto for at least a few weeks because of a strained muscle in his back, the third significant injury for the defending National League Central champions in the season's opening weeks. Cueto went on the 15-day disabled list on Monday. The Reds called up right-handed reliever Justin Freeman from Triple-A Louisville, a boost to...

Reds place Johnny Cueto on DL

The Reds enjoyed a full season of healthy starting pitching on their way to an NL Central crown last season. This year is already a different story, though, as they'll have to do without their Opening Day starter for at least the next 15 days. Cincinnati placed right-hander Johnny Cueto on the disabled list Monday with a strained back muscle he suffered over the weekend. ...

Reds put RHP Cueto on 15-day DL

CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Reds have lost top starter Johnny Cueto for at least a few weeks because of a strained muscle in his back. The defending NL Central champions put Cueto on the 15-day disabled list on Monday and called up right-hander Justin Freeman from Triple-A Louisville, giving Cincinnati another reliever for the start of a series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Reds...

Johnny Cueto to 15-Day DL

The Reds started the same 5 starting pitchers for basically the entire season last year.  After Johnny Cueto’s injury, the Reds stand no chance of repeating that again this year.  Cueto strained a muscle in his back during his start in Pittsburgh on Saturday night. If you remember correctly, Cueto suffered a pulled oblique muscle in the first inning of a playoff game against...

Cueto to DL

The Cincinnati rotation did not miss a start last year but that streak is now in jeopardy as Johnny Cueto is expected to go on the DL with a strained lat muscle. Though it’s a severe blow to Cincinnati early season aspirations, Reds fans are hopeful it won’t be long term and it will likely give opportunity for minor league dominator Tony Cingrani to show what he’s ready to...

Pirates the unlikely victors vs. Reds

Jeff Locke against Johnny Cueto?  Good luck.  Even I wasn’t feeling too optimistic about this game.  However, Jeff Locke’s Pirates proved me wrong, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.  Cueto left after just 4.1 innings with an injured arm.  I won’t be happy about the injury, but the timing worked out well for…

Sizing Up Tony Cingrani

The Reds received a scare when Johnny Cueto was placed on the disabled list with a strained lat muscle. As he returned to Cincinnati for further testing yesterday, the minor leagues’ hottest pitcher took the mound in Louisville awaiting to hear whether he would replace Cincinnati’s ace. In three Triple-A starts, Tony Cingrani destroyed the International League: he struck out...

In brief: 5-game losing streak

Last game Can I just write *shakes head* here and be done with it? The Reds were swept yesterday by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Friday they got a shaky start from Mike Leake, which maybe isn’t so surprising after all. Saturday they lost Johnny Cueto to what is still a mystery injury. Yesterday it was another of those hit-the-wall kinds of games. Mat Latos was rocking a shut-out when...
