Found November 02, 2011 on Shutdown Corner:
It's basically a fait accompli that Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck will be the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft should he choose to declare for it, and there are those who believe that Luck is the best college quarterback prospect in years — maybe since Peyton Manning, maybe since John Elway. But one analyst who's not necessarily over the moon with Luck's rare combination of poise, football acumen, ability to read defenses, and playbook intelligence is former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms. On SIRIUS NFL Radio with Adam Schein and Rich Gannon's Tuesday show, Simms said that while Luck does have some positive attributes, he's not buying in just yet. "I think the hype is a little too much," Simms said.  "I feel bad for him in that respect. I mean, [how's] he going to do to match what they say he can do? There's a lot to him.  I think his bes...

Monkey wrench for 'Suck for Luck' crowd

There has been plenty of discussion the past few weeks -- much of it summarily dismissed in the locker rooms of the franchises most often mentioned -- about whether a team might purposely sabotage its season to gain the first overall selection in the 2012 NFL draft, and thus, the rights to Stanford quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Andrew Luck. For the most part, players...

Pre-Oregon State interview: Brent Etiz

Every week Stanford sends out three captains to the opening coin toss —- one from the offense, one from the defense and one from the special teams squad. The offense’s leader is Andrew Luck and Michael Thomas always represents the defense, but the special teams captain changes from week to week depending on last game’s performances.

Former NFL quarterback is not sold on Stanford QB Andrew Luck

Last week, former NFL quarterback Phil Simms made some news by suggesting that Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning would tell the franchise not to draft Andrew Luck if he recovers from his neck operation and is deemed healthy. This week, Simms explains that he isn’t buying into all the hype over the Stanford signal caller. Simms was a guest on Sirius NFL Radio with...

Stanford not overlooking Oregon St. after USC win

There's no blaming Stanford for reveling in that triple-overtime victory over USC last weekend. It's a win that will likely go down as one of the more memorable games of this season. So it seemed only natural that much of the talk surrounding the fourth-ranked Cardinal (8-0, 6-0 Pac-12) this week was about that game. Oregon State, which hosts Stanford on Saturday, got little...

Phil Simms: Secretly Insane

Given that Phil Simms works with human Ambien pill Jim Nantz, you could be lulled into thinking that the CBS lead analyst is a relatively mild, non-controversial media presence. But every once in a while, Phil gets a little bit nutty, and it's been happening more frequently as of late. First there were his angry comments about QB stats last year, which essentially made him...

Peyton Manning takes a shot at Phil Simms

Well, the flesh may be weak, but the spirit still has a perpetually impatient look on its face. The decision of Colts quarterback Peyton Manning to show up unannounced and meet with the media included a comment about the recent ridiculous remarks from Phil Simms of CBS and Showtime that Manning won’t “let” the Colts…

Records in jeopardy for Marino, ’72 Dolphins

The NFL season nearing its midpoint plays out in a macabre context from a Miami vantage, with so much attention fixated on “achieving” the worst record — perhaps even 0-16? — and salvaging from a sunken season the loot of a No. 1 overall draft pick and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
