Found January 18, 2013 on Raise the Jolly Roger!:
The World Baseball Classic rosters were announced on Thursday, and as we expected there are a couple of Pirates planning to participate. Team Canada will be of the most interest to Pirate fans. Russell Martin will be the starting catcher, and the Bucs’ #2 prospect Jameson Taillon will probably be in the rotation. Chris Leroux is also on the Canadian pitching staff–he could start or relieve. I will certainly be very interested to see Taillon pitch live, especially against MLB-caliber hitters. I didn’t even know that he was Canadian until now, but apparently he is a dual citizen of Canada and the U.S.  A couple of other notable Pirate pitchers representing their countries are Wandy Rodriguez (Dominican Republic) and Jason Grilli (Italy). Wandy will be at or near the top of the Dominican rotation, and Grilli (presumably) will close for the Italians…if this roster can ever get him a lead. Taillon highlights the Bucco minor leaguers playing in the Classic. The others include Ivan De Jesu...

Winter Leagues Recap: Marte Drives In Two Runs

In playoff action out of the Dominican yesterday, Starling Marte went 1-for-4, with a double, sacrifice fly and two RBI’s. He also recorded an outfield assist in the fourth inning that kept the game close, as his team trailed by two runs at the time. In the top of the next inning, Marte drove in his second run of the game to put his team up by two runs. Marte’s Escogido team...

First Pitch: The Long-Term Costs Of Arbitration Decisions

The Pittsburgh Pirates exchanged arbitration figures with two players today, giving us a look at what each side is asking for in each individual case. The players who exchanged figures were James McDonald and Neil Walker. The Pirates will now receive arbitration hearings with each of these players. The sides can agree to a deal anytime before that hearing. If the Pirates go to a...

Winter Leagues Recap: Johnson Helps His Team To Championship Series

In playoff action last night from the Dominican, Kris Johnson continued his brilliant Winter League season, allowing one run on two hits over seven innings, helping his team to an important win. Johnson has pitched well this entire Winter, allowing more than one earned run just once, and even that was only two runs back on December 30th. In 53.1 innings between the regular season...

First Pitch: Is Jeff Karstens Over-Rated or Under-Rated?

Back at the end of November the Pittsburgh Pirates non-tendered right-handed pitcher Jeff Karstens. The move was pretty controversial at the time. Karstens was projected to make $3.8 M through arbitration and was coming off a pretty good year when he was healthy. The starter posted a 3.97 ERA in 90.2 innings, with a 6.55 K/9, a 1.49 BB/9, and an 0.79 HR/9. The problem was that Karstens...

Jeff Karstens, Pirates finalize $2.5M contract

Jeff Karstens is staying with the Pittsburgh Pirates, finalizing a $2.5 million, one-year contract on Thursday. Karstens can earn an additional $1 million in performance bonuses based on innings. The 30-year-old right-hander was 5-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 15 starts and four relief appearances last year, when he missed time because of separate injuries to a hip, groin and shoulder....

Jameson Taillon is the Guardian, Russell Martin is Puck (the Pirates in the WBC post)

When the news came out a couple of days ago that Andrew McCutchen wouldn't be taking part in the World Baseball Classic because he wanted to dedicate himself to getting ready for his 2013 season with the Pirates, I had two thoughts:  1.) Well, at least he won't get hurt or burn himself out early this year. 2.) I still kind of wish Andrew McCutchen had a chance to...

RHP Cruz signs minor-league contract with Phillies

Right-hander Juan Cruz has signed a minor-league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies that includes an invitation to spring training, CBSSports.com reported. Cruz, 33, spent the 2012 season with Pittsburgh before the Pirates cut him in August. He worked 35 2/3 innings in 43 games as a reliever and posted a 1-2 record with a 2.78 ERA. His 12-year career in the major leagues began...

Pirates Sign Hawpe, Invite Him and Three Others To Spring Training

In what is a pretty clear trend the Pirates have brought on yet another Clint Hurdle guy, this time it’s Brad Hawpe.  You’ll remember before the 2011 season they signed Garrett Atkins and invited him to Spring Training as well.  This is basically the exact same signing, and will likely have the exact same result. [...]

First Pitch: Aggressively Ranking Prospects

Today I posted the profile for the number 12 prospect in the system, Dilson Herrera. In the write-up I mentioned that Herrera was the favorite to be the 2013 version of Alen Hanson or Gregory Polanco. In somewhat of a coincidence, Charlie at Bucs Dugout posted a review of the 2013 Prospect Guide today, and noted a few of the aggressive rankings in the book (with Herrera being one...
