AAA: INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS  Box Score Result: Indianapolis 4, Toledo 2 Starting Pitcher: Gerrit Cole, RHP (1-1, 3.65) – 6.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Tony Sanchez, C (.276) – 2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI Other Notable Performers: Josh Harrison, 2B (.625) – 2-for-3, BB Jordy Mercer, SS (.295) – 2-for-4 Game Notes: Gerrit Cole had a much better start than he did in his first two outings. He gave up just one run in 6.1 innings, after combining for six innings total in the first two starts. The downside was that Cole walked four batters in those 6.1 innings. Control was a problem for him at the end of his time with Altoona, and he threw a lot of pitches in a small amount of innings in his first two outings. This was a much better start, but there’s still things for him to work on. Tony Sanchez hit his first home run of the season. He is now 7-for-14 in his last four games, with two doubles and a homer. John Fredland wrote about Sanchez getting work on his hitting, and what led to his big three hit game the other night.   AA: ALTOONA CURVE  Altoona was suspended 1-1 in extra innings. The game will be completed tomorrow. Casey Sadler made a good start, throwing seven innings with one run on five hits and two walks, striking out five. Mel Rojas is currently 2-for-4 with a walk.   A+: BRADENTON MARAUDERS Box Score Result: Bradenton 3, Jupiter 1 Starting Pitcher: Robby Rowland, RHP (1-0, 2.57) – 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 0 HR Top Hitter: Willy Garcia, RF (.279) – 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI Other Notable Performers: Quinton Miller, RHP (4.15) – 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 HR Game Notes: Earlier today Robby Rowland had the following pre-game tweet: Today’s marks the first time in my career to have “Five Guys” on my start day. We’ll see how this one turns out. — Robby Rowland (@RobbyRow_12) April 16, 2013 After his six shutout innings with two hits and six strikeouts? So I think I’m gonna be going with #FiveGuys this year for pre-game meals. — Robby Rowland (@RobbyRow_12) April 17, 2013 Bradenton won their second game of the season, thanks to Rowland, but also due to two RBIs from Willy Garcia. Alen Hanson was out of the lineup for the second day in a row, following a three error game.   A: WEST VIRGINIA POWER Box Score Result:  West Virginia 8, Greenville 3 Starting Pitcher: Orlando Castro, LHP (1.17) – 5.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 0 HR Top Hitter:  Stetson Allie, 1B (.411) – 4-for-5, HR, 2 RBI Other Notable Performers Wyatt Mathisen, C (.220) – 3-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI Eric Wood, 3B (.318) – 2-for-5, 2B Junior Sosa, CF (.286) – 3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI Game Notes: Stetson Allie hit his sixth homer of the year, coming in the ninth inning with one runner on base. West Virginia was already leading 6-3 at the time. Allie extended his hitting streak to ten games. Raul Fortunato went 0-for-5, snapping a nine game hitting streak. Orlando Castro has allowed two earned runs in 15.1 innings this season, with a 15:0 K/BB ratio.

A.J. Burnett: Anatomy of a One-Hitter

A.J. Burnett’s almost-perfect outing helped the Pirates to a 5-0 win. So many events have to go right for a no-hitter to happen. We sometimes lose sight of that, living in this Golden Age of 23 no-hitters in the last six years. Even with no-hitters becoming almost as common an occurrence as Clint Barmes home runs, they still require a potent combination of talent and good fortune...

Pirates Notebook: Top of the Lineup Heating Up

Wins are for the most part an antiquated statistic in baseball, but sometimes a win can carry a bit of significance. A.J. Burnett got his first one of the 2013 campaign Wednesday night at PNC Park, but that was not what people will remember about the game. Burnett not only got strikeout No. 2,000 for his career, he flirted with perfection and took a no-hitter into the seventh inning...

Shelby Miller, Cards face off vs. A.J. Burnett

The Pittsburgh Pirates finally scored some runs for A.J. Burnett in his most recent outing, and their offense seems to have turned the corner since that victory. Prospect Trends: Some Fast Starts for West Virginia Hitters

Allie’s fast start has stirred much talk The season’s first two weeks have produced some noteworthy performances in the Pirates’ farm system, both good and bad. It’s way too early to start drawing any conclusions from these performances, but it’s not too early to scope out some players who’ll be interesting to follow closely, either with enthusiasm or concern. The biggest...

Video: Pirates fan makes a HUGE catch

Here is something you may have missed on Monday, as Pittsburgh Pirates fan made a huge catch. And when we say huge, we mean HUGE. Check out the grab, or the glove this Pirates fan used to haul in a foul ball off the bat of Climt Barnes I’m not positive what the MLB rule book states on the size of gloves for outfielders, but I would advise all of them to get similar to this guy...

Final: Pirates 5, Cardinals 0 (box) WP: A.J. Burnett (1-2, 2.63 ERA) LP: Shelby Miller (2-1, 1.96 ERA) A.J. Burnett was perfect through 5 1/3 innings and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. We are going to lose a Jonathan Sanchez start?  Nooooooooo! Wow. There isn’t much in the world that sums up the 1980s quite like that. Last night’s game will be rescheduled and it will start over. Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Game 15

All I have to say is A.J. Burnett. The guy is a freaking legend.  A folk hero.  If the Pirates manage to turn it around this season it’s in large part due to the leadership of A.J. Burnett.  He is that big of an acquisition in my opinion. The Braves are in town for four…
