Rasheed Wallace may be headed back to the Motor City. The boisterous fan favorite, who played with the Detroit Pistons from 2004-09 and helped the franchise to a championship, could be close to joining new head coach Maurice Cheeks on the team’s bench.

That news comes on a night that saw the Pistons pass on Michigan guard Trey Burke in favor of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope — a decision that GM Joe Dumars explained by saying that “this is not a popularity contest.” Bringing back ‘Sheed would certainly be well-received by a Pistons fan base that has been extremely frustrated with an extended period of losing.

Detroit also might utilize Wallace’s fiery personality to help rookie power forward Tony Mitchell. The Pistons drafted the talented Mitchell in Round 2 on Thursday, despite questions about the ex-North Texas star’s motor.
