ST. LOUIS -- Anthony Rizzo had a two-run single, Chris Rusin pitched around seven hits in six innings, and the Chicago Cubs recorded their first shutout in St. Louis in 16 years with a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals on Friday night. Rusin (2-1) twice worked out of bases-loaded jams and only set the Cardinals down in order in the first. He struck out a season-high five and issued two intentional walks. Kevin Gregg recorded his 24th save to complete the Cubs' first shutout in St. Louis since Jeremi Gonzalez tossed one on June 23, 1997. Lance Lynn (13-6), attempting to become the National League's first 14-game winner, labored over 6 23 innings despite giving up just three hits. He threw 115 pitches and was charged with all three runs. He struck out five, walked five and hit two. Chicago has won two of three, but only has three wins in its past 12. They pulled off trade after trade all month long in effort to strengthen their Minor League system, and many experts believe they did a terrific job. Still, though, not all of the Cubs' veterans -- even those heavily rumored -- found new teams. Players such as Dioner Navarro, David DeJesus, Nate...

Rookie Brock Peterson settles into come-and-go role with Cardinals

ST. LOUIS -- On Wednesday, I asked Brock Peterson how it felt to be back. "I knew there was a chance," the 29-year-old rookie said. "After you are on the roster, it's a lot easier for them to make that decision to call you back up, but I didn't think it would happen that quickly." Come Thursday morning, he was gone. Peterson, who can play the outfield...

The news goes in opposite directions for each player, one positive and one negative. Here is the latest on...

Samardzija smashed, Phils roll to 12-1 win

Manager Dale Sveum was hoping that Jeff Samardzija could give the Cubs a lengthy outing Thursday but those wishes dissolved quickly. Philadelphia tagged Samardzija for 11 hits in only 3 1/3 innings as the Cubs suffered a 12-1 loss marking their sixth loss in their past seven games. This equaled the shortest start of Samardzija's career with the Phillies knocking him out on...
