In this morning’s Notes column, the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo suggests that the Red Sox need to ‘make a splash’ to improve but the on-field team and the organisation’s PR record after the disappointment of 2012. Cafardo suggests targeting Josh Hamilton as a free agent or trading for Joe Mauer to address the team’s lack of star power in the every day lineup.
Quite apart from the fact that the team that couldn’t find a way to add “a great all-around hitter who can hit for power and produce runs but also be a pure hitter who can hit for a high average” has yet to exist, the last thing the Red Sox should be doing now is throwing hundreds of millions of dollars at a player in order to make a good impression with their public. This team needs to rebuild from a 69-93 season and find a way to put the best team on the field for the next several years. If adding a Hamilton for Mauer is the best way to do that then fine, but pretending it should be done just to sate impatient fans and media ...

The Red Sox have signed three players they trimmed from their roster last week to make the 40-man roster deadline, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com.
The three? David Carpenter -- the pitcher brought over from Toronto with John Farrell, infielder Ivan De Jesus, and pitcher Sandy Rosario, who was claimed off waivers last month. De Jesus came over in the Dodgers blockbuster in August...
The Boston Red Sox have had ongoing negotiations with free
agent outfielder Nick Swisher, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
The Red Sox have had ongoing negotiations with Swisher and
Boston signed free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes earlier this
offseason, but they continue to be in the market for another as they view the
veteran as a platoon...
If I am trying to study for an exam, the last thing you should do is send me a text message informing me that the Boston Red Sox are in talks to acquire one of the best prospects in Major League Baseball.
Of course, this is exactly what my friend Ryan Courville did with a simple text message that read the following:
“Will Myers for Jon Lester?”
I spit out my coffee and immediately...
When the Oakland A’s came to visit the Red Sox this past season, most eyes were on Josh Reddick, who had exploded for the A’s since his trade from Boston. But outfielder Jonny Gomes, who was reportedly signed by the Red Sox this week, was also getting a preview of his next baseball home — whether he knew it or not. Gomes and Reddick put on the headsets at Fenway Park for a...
I don't own many James Loney cards, but when I do, they're not cards I seek out. My first ever trade netted me a surprise Loney auto - my only signature of his - and I have a few base cards and the like lying around. However, today's card is one I'm more than happy to own, and it prominently features the former Dodger bust.Of course, as you've probably already...
The Boston Red Sox have free agent outfielder Nick Swisher “on
their radar,” reports George A. King III of The New York Post.
According to a person with
knowledge of the situation the Red Sox have an interest in the switch-hitting
right fielder who can also handle first base.
Even after signing veteran Jonny Gomes to a two-year
contract, the Red Sox...
The Red Sox have long been reported to be interested in catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli, and now it sounds like they’re ready to show him up close what the team can offer.
Napoli is visiting Boston this weekend to meet with the Red Sox, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
Napoli would most likely play first base if he were to sign with Boston, with his catching abilities taking...
Now that the Thanksgiving holiday has passed and the winter meetings are less than two weeks away, the Red Sox’ offseason should heat up soon. After signing outfielder Jonny Gomes to a 2-year, $10 million deal on Wednesday, the team is ready to move on to filling the major holes on the roster, including shortstop, [...]
The Boston Red Sox continue to look for ways to shore up their outfield, and they have reportedly sought out free-agent outfielder Nick Swisher.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox “have had ongoing negotiations with Swisher and his agents.”
Last season, Swisher hit .272 with the Bronx Bombers, smacking 24 home runs while driving in 93 RBIs in 148 games...
Rander Henderson, Mayor of Ft. Myers, belives the city and county would have been better off without JetBlue Park.
Fort Myers mayor Randy Henderson told the News-Press
that the Lee County region would have been better served to permit the
Red Sox to leave the county rather than paying for the construction of a
new facility for the Sox, JetBlue Park, which opened in 2012...
With Yu Darvish's success this season, it's easy to forget there was another Japanese phenom who was supposed to light the Majors on fire. Well, actually there have been numerous Japanese pitchers with high ceilings who fell well short of expectation. But one such pitcher, Daisuke Matsuzaka fell so famously flat, his name will forever be linked with Japanese pitchers...
The world keeps spinning. The Red Sox offseason is spinning as well. The speed of both varies greatly. The Red Sox have met with free agent first baseman and catcher Mike Napoli while also signing outfielder Jonny Gomes. They will continue looking at other outfield options at the moment hoping that they can find [...]
Have you ever saved up for something for a really long time, only to smash open the piggy bank, run out the door and find out that what you wanted isn’t there anymore?
That’s sort of where the Red Sox are this free agent season, where they’ve cleared a ton of cap space but don’t have much of a market to go spending in. They want to make wise choices, and they want to contend...
There was a lot of Phils’ news and rumors this week: the Phils were in on Josh Hamilton before they were out on Hamilton, they were finally linked to a bullpen arm, protected some Minor Leaguers while exposing others, and just as Ryan Dinger and I offered our opinions if the Phillies should make a play for the recently designated Chone Figgins, the Phillies signed a third baseman...
