The 37-29 Baltimore Orioles will start a four game series with the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night. The Orioles are staying in the division and wild card race and their offense has carried them this season.  The Orioles are in the top 10 in four different hitting categories, runs, batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. First baseman Chris Davis is having an even better season than he did in 2012. Davis is batting .335 and leads the majors in homeruns with 21. Davis also has 52 RBIs, and has an OPS of 1.099 Adam Jones has also had an all-star type season with 14 homeruns and 45 RBIs. Davis and Jones along with Manny Machado have been the best Orioles hitters this season. The Red Sox starting pitchers will have to step up and pitch better if they expect to contain the Orioles offense.  The Red Sox haven't gotten consistent starting pitching from anyone not named Clay Buchholz. Ryan Dempster, who is scheduled to pitch Friday night, has been inconsistent all ...

Chris Davis singled home the tiebreaking run with two outs in the 13th inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles an exhausting 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a four-game series between AL East contenders. Danny Valencia homered for the Orioles, who moved into second place and within 2 1/2 games of Boston. Baltimore won despite leaving 16 on base and going 4 for...

Jacoby Ellsbury’s Hot Streak Creating Wave That Red Sox Must Ride, As Unpredictability Will Always Loom

Jacoby Ellsbury’s season has essentially been a microcosm of his career. He’s been up. He’s been down. He’s been injured. He’s been criticized. He’s been defended. And he’s been arguably the most difficult player on the Red Sox to gauge. Sounds familiar, right? This season is a big one for Ellsbury because of his impending free agency. The hope was that Ellsbury could...

Recap: Lester roughed up at the Trop, Sox lose

Anything you have to say about tonight's 8-3 loss against the Rays begins and ends with Jon Lester. Sure, there were near-fireworks when Rays starter Rofaustoberto Hernancarmonadez, still pitching in the 8th inning with a five-run lead and a high pitch count, drilled Dustin Pedroia. All sides behaved themselves, but it was so obvious that Joe Maddon had ordered retailiation...

Orioles rumors: Baltimore not interested in Jon Garland

It's been reported that the Baltimore Orioles are in the market for starting pitching help, and general manager Dan Duquette is known for his love of bargain hunting. For these reasons, the O's became a rumored potential landing spot for recently released right-hander Jon Garland. However, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports has been told that Baltimore isn't interested in the...

Mike Napoli Exits Game Against Orioles Because of Illness

Mike Napoli is apparently feeling under the weather. Napoli, who started Thursday’s game at first base, was replaced by Mike Carp before the start of the bottom of the third inning. The Red Sox have since announced that Napoli exited because of illness. Napoli doubled against Orioles starter Kevin Gausman in the second inning, but nothing stuck out while he ran the bases. He later...

Red Sox, Rays Should Think Twice Before Escalating Animosity in Wake of Monday’s Beaning (Video)

If the Rays want revenge for John Lackey‘s beaning of Matt Joyce on Monday, they’re not likely to get it early on Tuesday night. After all, neither team can afford to lose a starting pitcher in this game, after they both burned up their bullpens in an extra-inning affair the last time out. NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette isn’t ruling out any unruly behavior from the two teams...

2013 All-Star Game: Making the case for Nava

The Guru Contributing Writer There are nine Boston Red Sox players listed on the 2013 All-Star ballot, one for every position, including designated hitter. With the game a month away, David Ortiz appears a lock to make the team. Dustin Pedroia and Jacoby Ellsbury have a good chance to make it as well. A Red Sox player deserving a spot is not even on the ballot; Daniel Nava. Looking...

Four Bases: Red Sox 2, Rays 1 – Nava Goes Deep to Seal Series Win

A relatively refreshing rubber match. After 18 combined runs in the first game, 11 combined runs in the second game, the Red Sox out-pitched the Rays in to take the 2-1 win, winning their eighth game against the team from the gulf. Here are the four bases: First Base: Escaping by the skin of their fingers. The rotation in this series should have gone 0-3, considering they combined...

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Miguel Gonzalez allowed one run over eight innings and Nick Markakis hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the seventh inning as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 Tuesday night. They trail the Boston Red Sox by 2 ½ games right now. As well, the Orioles have taken five out of six games...

Defensive Plays Not Enough For Angels In Loss To The Orioles

In almost an identical match to last night’s affair, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 3-2, in a defensive web gem style of a night. Mike Trout went back-to-back days with a solo home run, today in the fourth inning, for his 12th of the season, and eighth of his career against the Orioles. Trout only went 1-for-4 on the day, but was victim to two...

Chris Davis and David Murphy, in the Zone

For Chris Davis and David Murphy, “in the zone” doesn’t extend to the mound. Each has a successful pitching performance on his resume, but in neither case was there a feeling of being in command. Their scoreless outings — in distinctly different situations — were more “lucked out” than “locked in.” Murphy made his pitching debut last week, at Fenway Park. With his...

Angels squander chances in rainy Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Adam Jones homered and drove in three runs, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 Monday night in a game marred by rain. The teams played with wet baseballs on a muddy field and endured a delay of more than two hours before the final out was recorded shortly before midnight. Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton homered for the Angels, who have...
