Found August 31, 2013 on Redlegs Review:
Volquez said he chose #Dodgers over #Reds, #BlueJays, #Orioles, #Phillies and "a couple more." Said he's willing to start or relieve. — Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) August 30, 2013 There was a time in Cincinnati when many thought Edinson Volquez was going to be a star for years to come. This optimism was justified in 2008 when the right-hander posted a 17-6 record and 3.21 ERA while finishing fourth in Rookie of the Year voting. However, that optimism slowly faded as Volquez could never repeat that kind of success as a Red, partly because of lingering injuries, and partly because of poor performance when healthy. In December 2011, the Reds decided enough was enough, and sent the Dominican native to San Diego in the trade that brought current ace Mat Latos to the Queen City. In his first season as a Padre, Volquez posted a respectable 11-11 record and 4.14 ERA in 32 starts. It was enough to give the Padres hope that Volquez was finally going to return to the fo...

Civil rights organization upset with way Reds handled Brandon Phillips tirade

Although Brandon Phillips and beat writer C. Trent Rosecrans have apparently made amends, one civil rights organization is still upset with Phillips, manager Dusty Baker, and the team over the incident, which involved Phillips unleashing a profanity-laced and personal verbal attack on Rosecrans before Wednesday's game. The National Association for the Advancement of Fat Acceptance...

Struggling Volquez to work out of Dodgers' bullpen

LOS ANGELES Newly signed Dodgers right-hander Edinson Volquez is going to work out of the bullpen, at least for now, but it's possible he may get a chance to start in the final month of the season. The Dodgers made the signing of Volquez, 30, official on Friday. They cleared room on their roster by sending reliever Chris Withrow to Triple-A Albuquerque. Volquez was released...

Phillips, Reynolds lead Reds past Rockies 8-3

Brandon Phillips tripled, homered and doubled in his first three at-bats, Greg Reynolds beat his former team for his first major league win in two years, and the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Colorado Rockies 8-3 on Saturday night. Phillips scored three times, drove in two runs and just missed becoming the first Reds player to hit for the cycle since Eric Davis did it against the...

Edinson Volquez signs 1-year deal with Dodgers

Edinson Volquez has signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander was in the bullpen Friday night for the opener of a three-game series against San Diego. Volquez was the Padres' opening day starter this season for the second straight year. He went 9-10 with a 6.01 ERA in 27 starts before getting released Tuesday, two days after the club designated...

Edinson Volquez’s Place in Padres History

The Edinson Volquez era finally ended on Tuesday, when the Padres released the erratic right-hander three days after designating him for assignment. A lot went wrong during his nearly two seasons in San Diego after coming over from the Reds as part of the package for Mat Latos. Pitching coach Darren Balsley noted that Volquez overthrew in games, which “led to mechanical breakdowns...

Leake struggles in Reds' 7-4 loss to Rockies

Reds starter Mike Leake struggled again Sunday. Leake was knocked out in the fifth inning in the Colorado Rockies' 7-4 victory over Cincinnati. Leake (11-6) allowed six runs and eight hits and struck out four in 4 1-3 innings. In his past four starts, Leake is 1-1 with a 7.89 ERA, following a stretch where he gave up three or fewer runs in 12 of 15 starts from May 15 to Aug...

The Call-Up: Billy Hamilton by Jason Parks and Bret Sayre

As the calendar flips to September and the rosters expand, the Reds bring up an outfielder with game-changing speed and the steals to prove it.

Dodgers sign Edinson Volquez

Once highly touted pitcher Edinson Volquez was released by the San Diego Padres on Tuesday but found a new home pretty quickly. Last night the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Volquez to a major league contract. To me this looks like it’s more of a depth move as Volquez has been absolutely dreadful posting a 6.01 ERA over 142 innings pitched. He’ll most likely be used to give some...

Nicasio hit hard early, Rockies lose to Reds 8-3

Reds 8, Rockies 3. With AP Photos. Juan Nicasio was in trouble right away. He issued a four-pitch walk to Shin-Soo Choo and served up a triple to Brandon Phillips to start a 25-pitch first inning. The right-hander was gone before he could get out of the fifth. ''I don't think he got loose,'' Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. ''He used the first inning...

Daily Friar 8.29.13

The best compliment you can give to any upper management is to perform well when thrown into a situation where they really need you. That probably came out a lot more convoluted than I meant it to. Anyways, with the absence of Edinson Volquez from the team (who has now signed with Dodgers) the Padres needed an arm to come up and fill in his spot in the rotation. Surely and ERA just...
