Here's a jarring story to go into your weekend with: a pair of Colorado Rockies minor league pitchers have been charged with two counts each of first degree rape and first degree sex offense, according to a report from MiLB.com. The two players in question are members of low-A Asheville: 23-year old Michael Mason, and 23-year old Jesse Meaux. Both men can face life in prison with no opportunity for parole if found guilty. Mason was drafted by the Rockies in 2012 in the 24th round of the Draft out of Marshall, and has a 3.38 ERA in 29 1/3 innings. Meaux was a 19th round pick by the Rockies in the 2011 draft out of UC Santa Barbara, and has a 0.90 ERA in 20 innings. Mason hasn't pitched since July 26th, while Meaux hasn't pitched since May 24th. The Rockies released the following statement on Thursday night. "The Colorado Rockies and their affiliate, the Asheville Tourists, are aware of the arrests and the very serious allegations made against two players, Michael Mason and Jesse Meaux. Each organization is shocked and deeply concerned about the allegations. At this time, the players have been suspended as the investigation and legal process continue. "We are working with the authorities investigating the circumstances and issues surrounding the events and are awaiting further details and findings. Given that this is an ongoing legal investigation, it would be inappropriate to comment or speculate any further." Rape is a very serious, disgusting crime, and even if both players are found innocent or plead down, their lives are going to be forever changed by these charges (SEE: Josh Lueke). Both players have been indefinitely suspended while the investigation is pending, and I'd wager that their careers are over, especially in light of the warranted firestorm surrounding Lueke when the Mariners acquired him from the Rangers.
