MONTREAL, QC - JUNE 27: General Manager and President Glen Sather of the New York Rangers (C) works at the draft table during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft at the Bell Centre on June 27, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. (Photo by Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)
Andrew Gross at the Bergen Record reports that Glen Sather spoke with Henrik Lundqvist's agent Don Meehan about a contract extension before the Alain Vigneault press conference yesterday. They expect to speak again next week. Brett Cyrgalis at the New York Post has this from Sather... “He’s a great goaltender. He’s 31 years old, we want him to finish his career in New York and continue to be a great goaltender for the next six or seven or eight years, depending on how long he wants to play.” ...love to hear the two sides are talking, but still not convinced he's going to sign before the season. ...how this contract plays out will tell us a lot about Lundqvist. If he pushes for a max contract, then he's a complete phony. However, if he gives the Rangers a hometown discount, then I know he's serious about wanting to win in New York. For more on a possible Lundqvist extension, click here. Sather also addressed the re-signing of RFAs Derek Stepan, Ryan McDonagh and Carl Hagelin... “The interesting thing about contracts is that you can always renew them. The three guys we have coming up now, we’re going to renew them all. “I’m not planning on purging the hockey team because we have some contracts that are up. We’re a pretty young hockey team.” ...always good to hear that Sather doesn't plan on abandoning the strategy that has allowed the organization to build from within for the first time in forever. Sather did not mention Matts Zucarello. However, reports from Norway state that the two sides are current working on a multi-year deal.
