MLB Young Guns: Shelby Miller

In this series I will be writing analyses of the best young pitchers and position players that the MLB has to offer. Player: Shelby Miller Background: Miller comes from Brownwood, Texas and attended the local high school. He had an impressive high-school career as he threw four no-hitters and a perfect game. As a senior, he really caught the attention of major league scouts,...

St. Louis Cardinals: Shelby Miller throws seven shutout innings against San Francisco

After Friday night’s tilt with the San Francisco Giants was cancelled due to the severe and tornadic thunderstorms that made their way through the St. Louis area, the St. Louis Cardinals needed rookie ace Shelby Miller to pitch deep and effectively into the first game of a double-header against the Giants on Saturday afternoon. Miller did exactly that and helped manager Mike Matheny...

Adam Wainwright and Shelby Miller: Is there a better combo in baseball?

On Saturday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, the St. Louis Cardinals sent both of their aces, Shelby Miller and Adam Wainwright, to the mound in a double-header against the San Francisco Giants Both were absolutely outstanding. Wainwright and Miller weren’t just outstanding, they were dominant. Shelby Miller took the bump for the first-game of the double-header and simply mowed down...

Cold Streak or Bust? – Matt Cain

Matt Cain’s follow-up to his 2012 career year has not gone as planned. The twenty-eight-year-old righty currently sits in third atop the home-runs-allowed leaderboard, having given up 13 bombs on the season. At first glance, the eye-popping number in Cain’s peripherals is a career high home-run per fly ball of 16.5%. Cain has always had an innate ability to keep home runs down...

Who will get the start on Wednesday?

As a result of the rainout on Friday, the Cardinals pushed back Shelby Miller's start to game one of their split double-header against San Francisco Saturday, with Adam Wainwright starting the nightcap on normal rest.  But the rainout also will force the Cardinals to have to make a difficult decision as to who will start this Wednesday's game, which would have been Miller...

Cardinals' home grown pitchers are phenomenal

A lot of research would be needed to find another team with so much home-grown young pitchers performing as well as the young pitchers of the St. Louis Cardinals in the long history of the game. With an average age of 23.8 years old, Lance Lynn, Shelby Miller, Tyler Lyons, John Gast and now Michael Wacha have gone a combined 16-4 with a 2.54 ERA. And that is just the starting...

MLB Young Guns: Michael Wacha

Player: Michael Wacha Bio: Another prospect, another Cardinal. That is not the only similarity between Shelby Miller and Wacha, as they both hail from Texas. Again, he was also accepted to play at Texas A&M, but unlike Miller, elected to play college ball. In his final season, he put up some great numbers, pitching to a 2.06 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 16 starts. Given this, the...

Cardinals' offense makes most of final outs

ST. LOUIS -- It looked like Matt Cain might escape. After the Cardinals scored twice on the Giants ace in the bottom of the third inning, he stepped from the mound to chat with a coach, regained his composure, then went after Matt Holliday. When the three-time All-Star threw a four-seam fastball that struck Holliday out looking, it appeared Cain had poured cold water on the Cardinals...

Postgames Wrap: Terrible Third Inning Sinks Giants, Terrible Third Inning Sinks Giants

Today was a pretty lousy day for baseball. That’s not a particularly bold or controversial statement. The Giants had two, TWO, games against the St. Louis Cardinals, with their two best pitchers taking their turns. The Cardinals sit atop the NL Central and have the best record in the majors at 37-18. They’re real darn good. But still, a win or AT LEAST a competitive loss would’ve...
