The Boston Red Sox open their 10-game road trip Monday night against the lowly Astros at Minute Maid Ballpark. The Red Sox continued their success this weekend by taking two of three from the second place Diamonbacks. The Red Sox dropped a close one 7-6 to open the series on Friday but were able to beat NL Cy Young candidate Patrick Corbin on Saturday in Jake Peavy's debut.   The Sox were unable to gain much ground on the Rays, who also continue to win, but they do own a one-game lead and have an easier schedule over the next couple of weeks. An interesting tidbit its that the Rays have an off day Monday so in theory the Red Sox can push their lead in the American League East to one and half games. The last time the Red Sox visited Minute Maid Park, they swept a three-game series back in 2011. This will be only the third time the Sox will play in the Astros’ home stadium, with a 4-2 record in six games in Houston. The Sox hosted the Astros earlier this year, sweeping a four-game...

Peavy makes strong first impression

The Guru Contributing Writer New Red Sox starter Jake Peavy was impressive in his Boston debut Saturday night. When Peavy wasn’t muttering to himself on the mound, he was mowing down Diamondbacks. Peavy worked fast, threw strikes and displayed the air of an ace in the Sox 5-2 win. Peavy’s final line was seven innings, 99 pitches, four hits, two earned runs, two walks and...

Boston Red Sox Weekly: Here comes Peavy and the art of walking-off

AL East Standing: 1st Weekly Record: 4-2 Current Record: 67-45 (Every Saturday I will attempt to give some brief thoughts on the past week for the Boston Red Sox. It will be filled with hopes, frustrations, exhilaration, pain, and puns.)   Walking-Off Someone call David Bowie and Billy Zane, cause it’s a walk off. The Sox had back-to-back walk-off nights in Fenway against the...

Jake Peavy Pitches Like An Ace; Sox Win, 5-2

(Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)If there was any doubt about what the Red Sox got in their trade deadline deal, it was erased in seven superb innings on Saturday night in a 5-2 win. New starter Jake Peavy gave up just four hits and two runs in those seven innings, earning a rousing standing ovation from the 37,000 plus at Fenway when he left the game. Boston was clinging to...

Patrick Corbin handed tough loss in Boston

Though the Diamondbacks had a chance to come back and steal a second straight win in Boston, David Hernandez made sure it wasn’t to be in Saturday’s 5-2 loss to the Red Sox. Patrick Corbin had another quality start spoiled, losing his third game.

Jake Peavy’s Dominant Debut Further Proves Trade Was Right Move for Red Sox

Jake Peavy came into Boston champing at the bit for his chance to pitch for the Red Sox, but many were not sure if the former Cy Young winner would take the mound Saturday with stuff similar to what earned him the coveted pitching award in 2007. Those doubts were erased Saturday night whens Peavy delivered a dominating performance in his Boston debut. The 32-year-old had Diamondback...

Peavy shines in debut with Red Sox

Jake Peavy tipped his hat to the crowd as he left off the mound to a standing ovation after his first start since joining the Boston Red Sox. A smile would have to wait. "I was upset giving up that hit," Peavy said after allowing four hits, one of them against his final batter before walking off to a big cheer in Boston's 5-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks...

Your Morning Dump...Where Peavy was impressive

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer) Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Brandon Snyder recalls the first time he faced Jake Peavy. He took a ball and Peavy began screaming on the mound. Snyder stepped out, confused and a bit shaken. “I was like...

One Game In, I’m a Peavliever

We’re just one start down, but the Jake Peavy pick-up already looks like the shot in the arm we hoped it would be to our pitching staff. In his first Red Sox start, Peavs went seven innings giving up just four hits, two runs and striking out seven, powering the Sox to win. Even better, he finally shut down Cody Ross, who hasn’t stop blabbering about his return to Boston since...

Video: Peavy Lifts Red Sox to 5-2 Win Over DBacks

Jake Peavy's Boston Red Sox debut saw him strike out seven in seven innings of work. That along with two RBIs each from Shane Victorino and Jacoby Ellsbury helped them to a 5-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Fenway Park on Saturday night. Your browser does not support iframes. Jake Peavy Calls Jonny Gomes His ‘Favorite Player in the Big Leagues’ After Seeing All-Out Effort Firsthand

On Thursday night, Jonny Gomes was hurling himself into a wall and driving in runners, keying a six-run ninth inning comeback for the Red Sox. On Saturday night, he was throwing on the fly and cutting down the tying run at the plate, once again in the middle of the deciding moment. It’s all in a day’s work for Gomes — and no one knows that better than the newest member of the...

Make Room on the Bandwagon

That’s right, folks, I’m in. After months of resisting the allure of the 2013 Red Sox, I can resist no more. Why now, you ask? The hot start in April wasn’t enough. The new and improved John Lackey wasn’t enough. The improbable come-from-behind, walk-off wins weren’t enough. Why now?!?! Two words: Jake Peavy. After one start, I’m convinced he is the secret weapon that...

They won over the...

FOXSports.com MLB power rankings
