STARTING AT THE BOTTOM.

Posted June 16, 2013

4-12.

It leaves a lot of room for criticism. And time. 252 days worth of time to be exact.

We are starting from the bottom, people! And Mark Davis knows it. He has no illusions about where we stand.  http://www.mercurynews.com/sports/ci_23419243/poole-oakland-raiders-owner-mark-davis-says-team

Neither do us fans. Lost in looking just at the wins and losses, is WHY the dysfunction became so prevalent to begin with. Regardless of the reasons, it is now MD's job to clean up the mess, not whine about it being a mess. To his credit he's simply going about the task.

He hired Reggie McKenzie to handle the football side of the Raiders and will soon replace Amy Trask as the person running the business side. Though his plan is to be around more, his plan also includes giving people a goal, then staying the **** out of their way while they do what he asked. Sounds like a winning game plan to me.

The problem with the BUSINESS side of things wasn't intelligence. Look around and you'll see that Amy Trask was a VERY well respected exec. The trouble was the lack of delegation in the modern business era. Most decisions came down to her or AL DAVIS HIMSELF. MD is updating to a business model where more can be done, and different kinds of voices can lend you different perspectives on crucial decisions; allowing for a more grounded decision. That solution is in the works.

The problem with the FOOTBALL side (this is talking about LAST season, as I already went over 2011 and before), was poor attitude, poor self-image, and an internal lack of honesty. By lack of honesty I mean we ran systems that did not suit personnel and we had players on the roster serving as poor band-aids to cover for those same deficiencies. It was said after last season that we either needed to change the band-aids or the system, in order to make a go of it in 2013. Coach took a hard look in the mirror and said: Why not both?

The parts we really didn't need were cut away and we were left with a core group that doesn't include any "ME" players at all. Then we added even more team guys. The big knock so far is that either we didn't add any top flight talent; or if we did that it also comes with serious question marks. All the guys on the team who's talent USED TO command serious respect, will now have to earn back those reputations if they can.

So far (in OTA's) we have a team that has struggled but improved. Are a rag-tag bunch, but have all bought in. Have fallen short, then responded when challenged. Have circled the wagons and helped each other be better. That solution is not in the works, it's already bearing fruit as poor attitude and self-image have already been pushed out. (However a string of NON-COMPETITIVE loses in games that count, could bring it roaring back.)

For those who are keeping score, that's 3 of 3 problems addressed in the offseason alone. Now all we need is to finish it with more W's than we had last year. While I'd like to see at least 6-10, I'd do cartwheels over 9-7. Anything more than that and I'm getting arrested. :)

It's a solid foundation. And there is nothing better to build on than that.
