THE 12: #3 RUN SILENT, RUN DEEP

Posted March 07, 2013

LAST year my first installment of THE 12 was DRAFT FOR DEPTH. (http://www.yardbarker.com/forum/3/57/discussion/the_12_1_draft_for_depth/9939952)

We didn’t and we paid dearly for it. When injuries hit up front, there was no one good to plug in. When Secondary play got sloppy, there was no back-up to threaten the starters. Linebacker is still iffy, and our Tight Ends are one dimensional.

Though we did get Bryce Brown, and Marvin McNutt also showed some promise.

You know, I had to be Jamar Chaney’s biggest cheerleader a few years ago, now I’m the first to say that we only have 2 quality starters (DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks). We’ve been thin at Center since 2008 when Nick Cole (a G/C) filled in for the injured  Jamaal Jackson. Oh yeah, we’re also thin at Guard. Quick! Name the last quality blocking Tight End for this franchise! Quick! Who are we developing on the Offensive Line as a long-term starter? At any of the three positions, G, T or C. Name the guy we’re developing at LB. QB. WR. TE. FS. SS. CB (as a Starter). Lots of filler on this roster, right?

So you see what I mean.

THE MEAT:
We have a problem, and it’s how we value depth. Depth is not a luxury item, but for some reason in recent years our F.O. has been treating it like it is. You need depth when the injuries hit. You need depth to provide different looks and sets of problems for an opponent. You need depth to keep leverage at the bargaining table. You need depth to let starters know their job isn’t safe. (It’s one thing to lose your job after the season and a coaching regime change; it’s quite another to be shelved when games count and have your replacement play better than you were playing.)

Depth is why Andy Reid/Joe Banner’s Eagles were good for so long.

THE MOVE:

There are a few guys in this draft who would look good in the Eagles cupboard, but there are also a number of high quality veterans who are going to hit the street in the second round of Free Agency. Judging by how many quality guys are being allowed to test the market so far, I’m thinking that the post-Draft, post-OTA’s FA pool will be a bloodbath. There should be plenty of Evan Mathis/Derek Landri level veterans who are looking to be role players,  and not looking to talk about Dream Teams. Guys hoping for one more chance to start and earn a solid contract, with no mention of dynasties. It’s here where the smart money gets spent. A few hungry camp bodies to set the tone, coupled with an up-pace practice…

Let’s us run silent, and let us run deep.
