PLAYERS: Peter Gammons
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
Don't get me wrong. I don't dislike Dan Shaughnessy. He is a fine journalist, though maybe not in the class of legends like Peter Gammons or Will McDonough. However, his book Curse of the Bambino, written 21 years ago, does not deserve the millions it and its sequels have made and the aura it produced. If you go to Wikipedia, you will find seven pages about the Curse and attempts to break it. The book purports to blame all or most of the Sox problems between 1920 and 1990 on a curse produced by the sale of the mighty Babe to the Yankees by Boston owner Harry Frazee. What emerges is a 200-page book, entertaining at times, angry at times, boring at times. All of the famous 20th century near-misses-1946, 1948, 1949, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1986 are chronicled here. But this is not new. The Sox story has been told in numerous books and articles dating back to the twenties, when the Herald's Burt Whitman called the parade of stars from Boston to New York "the rape of ...

Gammons: 3 years, $45 million could satisfy Papelbon

It's not a true report or an exact quote from Papelbon's agent, but Peter Gammons' comments to WEEI's Mut and Merloni midday show indicate that Pap could be relatively affordable: How much are they going to be willing to pay a closer? Papelbon and his agents are going to be looking for about what they say the Red Sox offered Mariano Rivera, which is three times ...

Movember MLB Mustache Madness: Wild Card, Round 1 - Gammons vs. Simmons

The MLB Movember Mustache Madness Wild Card bracket is only getting wilder.  And now, mustaches from the MLB media.  A short-lived flirtation with a soup strainer isn't the only thing that bonds these two notorious Red Sox honks. Peter Gammons I know Gammons is old, but I didn't realize that they didn't even have color film back in his mustached days. VS. Bill...

Gammons on Jose Reyes, David Wright, and the Hot Stove

This afternoon, Peter Gammons was a guest of Mike Francesa on WFAN, and spoke about a variety of topics including Jose Reyes‘ free agency, the future of David Wright and the Mets, and other buzz from around baseball, basically saying the following: It’s good for the Mets the Dodgers aren’t in the mix. He believes that, eventually, Reyes will re-sign with the Mets. There...
