THE EAGLES FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK.

Posted July 22, 2013

USUALLY while there are millions of wrong ways to do something, there are only a handful (or fewer) of right ways to do that same thing.

If you WANT a franchise QB, you GO GET a franchise QB. However our F.O. keeps trying to bring in a franchise QB's on the cheap. After a couple of seasons where Donovan McNabb missed time time with injury, and also realizing that he wasn't getting any younger, the GM (at that time Tom Heckert) drafted Kevin Kolb 36th overall in the in 2007.

It was said that Kolb's drafting was just looking ahead, and that he wasn't brought in to unseat McNabb. That turned out to be true. No sportswriter seemed under the illusion that Kolb was a franchise QB, but he was seen as a solid one and not a bad addition. However the handwriting was on the wall: The time to start thinking about McNabb's replacement was here. It wasn't coming, it was here.

2008, 2009 we don't draft another QB. And why would we? We already had McNabb and Kolb. Besides, we signed Michael Vick in 2009 as a Wildcat operative/reclamation project/future trade bait/, (but not a franchise QB or even our future starter). It was said REPEATEDLY that ours was a QB situation worthy of envy.

Then stupid things started to happen and it all fell apart.

2010 saw us trade McNabb to the Redskins, as we handed the reigns to Kolb and drafted in the 4th round 122nd overall, Mike Kafka. This put our QB situation at: Kolb/Vick/Kafka. None of which were seen as a franchise QB. Kolb lost his job to Vick (due to injury) and would subsequently be traded to the Arizona Cardinals in 2011.

In 2011 we drafted no QB. We went into that season behind Vick/Kafka and Vince Young. Again, no franchise QB. Just 2 reclamation projects and a 4th rounder.

Last year we added Nick Foles (3rd round #88), and this year Matt Barkley (4th round #98)

Let's review!

Since 2007 our big QB additions were: a 2nd rounder, a 3rd rounder, two 4th rounders, and two Free Agents. And not ONE or them was talked about as being a franchise level QB when we added them. Not one. Even though we KNEW we had to replace a franchise QB, we made no move to GET ONE.

Now there's an argument about whether we should see which of the players on the roster MAY BE a franchise QB. And therein lies the joke. It would be a race to find the turtle who does the best cheetah imitation. The problem isn't the TURTLES, it's the idiots who decided to stage the contest.

BOTTOM LINE: We have no franchise QB.
