By the time the New York Islanders finish paying off Alexei Yashin’s buyout, he will end up costing $76.5 million in salary. These costs do not include giving away the future of the franchise by dealing Zdeno Chara and the second overall draft pick (Jason Spezza) to acquire Yashin.
Yashin was acquired for his goal-scoring ability. He played for the Islanders for five years, and then the remaining five years of his contract were bought out. By the time the buyout is complete the Islanders will have paid $643,382 for each goal that Yashin scored, making him the most expensive player ever.
Can you think of anyone who cost their team more per goal scored than Yashin?
Are the Islanders about to start Yashin, Part 2 with Kovalchuk?
