Another Bizarre Chapter In The Mario Willams Saga- Well my dear friends it has been a few weeks since I’ve uttered the words “Mario Williams” in one of my columns, BUT that is about to change. As a professional football player you attempt to utilize your offseason working hard at your craft and preparing for the tumultuous NFL season ahead. Sometimes though the summer months are marred by an engagement ring scandal, which typically indicates that things are not going according to plan. Despite those unconventional occurrences one most do their best to truck onward with their head held high avoiding any further drama. Again, if you follow the Buffalo Bills and/or Mr. Williams you know he has obviously not been receiving any “common sense” memos of late. Sigh. (courtesy: USATSI) This past Thursday Mario made headlines once again; only this time the body part causing a stir was not anyone’s ring finger, but rather his own mouth. When asked to describe new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s philosophy, Mario decided to take the not so well thought out approach: “He usually says ‘Kill ‘em or hurt ‘em.’  That’s what I always hear.” Now to be fair, we all know that athletes use a different approach to the English language than most. Typically killing a guy on offense doesn’t involve any sort of lethal weapon, but rather physical force that would still send most of us crying to our Mommies. However, with the recent history of “Bountygate” where the New Orleans Saints basically had their entire franchise wiped off the face of the NFL map, you’d think guys would be a bit more careful about their phraseology. For example, if your coach really does say ‘Kill ‘em or hurt ‘em.’ on a regular occurrence, you may want to either edit that for your media session, or use that thing called a mind and come up with a synonym or two. It may seem like I’m coming down awfully hard on number 94 for a few choice words, but I also took his side in the prior debate so this should just about even it out. In all seriousness though, I’m tired of players around the league either being this stupid or just lazy when it comes to things like this. It isn’t so much about the specific words Mario used, but the fact that he once again didn’t think about the consequences. When you make the kind of money Mario makes, after signing the type of deal he signed, you become one of (if not the only) face of a franchise. With that comes the responsibility of representing your team & in turn that team’s community. After having the type of first season that he did in Buffalo, you’d think he’d not only be working his ass off, but in addition, be a shining off-field example for the rest of his young teammates. Instead, his entire offseason is turning into a tabloid fiesta that any gossip columnist would drool over. (courtesy: USATSI) People can go right ahead and make excuses for why Mario didn’t play up to par in his first season with the Bills. Blame Dave Wannstedt’s simplistic defense. Blame how Mario wasn’t playing the right position. You can even throw in there that he started to come into his own towards the end of the year. I don’t care about any of that. What you CANNOT make excuses for is his behavior. I talk about choices that athletes make all the time in my column. Whether it’s sports stars filling our minds with wildly unrealistic expectations, or rookie’s running their mouths, we see this type of boneheaded blunder on a more than regular occurrence, however that shouldn’t excuse it. In fact it’s even more of a reason to watch what you say & do especially when you’re in front of the media. After a recent barrage of tweets from Williams’ Twitter account ranging from apologetic to excuse driven, it’s safe to say someone in the NFL’s league office agrees with me and wasn’t shy on sharing their opinion. All I can say is that after these past few months the guy better show up in September, because if not I think quite a few Bills fans will be calling for someone to ‘kill ‘em or hurt ‘em.’ PS: As minicamp broke on Friday, Williams apparently felt it was finally time to step up and be a leader. According to the Buffalo News, Mario offered up some sage advice about how Bills players should be spending their upcoming time off: “This is not vacation time. You can take a trip or whatever. That’s fine. But this six weeks that everybody has is not just go home and eat Doritos.” I give up. Tweet of the Week: If I were a bartender in Buffalo, I’d certainly know what to replace mundane beer nuts & pretzels with this week… #Buffalo #nightlife RT @NFL_ATL Mario Williams to Bills players: Don't sit around eating Doritos http://t.co/olXGLpfuDb — Luke Hammill (@lucashammill) June 15, 2013 Have thoughts about this week’s column or a topic you want featured in next week’s column? Bills QB Competition is Open, But Not Even

Since the coronation as franchise savior drafting of QB EJ Manuel by the Buffalo Bills, one of the most talked about stories heading into camp has been whether Manuel will start week 1, or if Head Coach Doug Marrone (HCDM, for short) will turn to grizzled vet Kevin Kolb to minimize his own growing pains as a brand new head football coach.
