Found July 21, 2013 on Awful Announcing:
PLAYERS: Jeff Locke
TEAMS: Pittsburgh Pirates
Reds announcer and Fox play by play man Thom Brennaman got caught with a hot mic Sunday afternoon with Cincy hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates.  After Pirates pitcher Jeff Locke walked Reds SS Zack Cozart, you can hear Brennaman whisper "this guy sucks" into the microphone. One would have to presume Brennaman is not talking about Cozart, but Locke.  Perhaps that's a little harsh considering Locke was 8-2 this year with a 2.15 ERA entering the game and was selected as an All-Star.  Aaaand he picked up the win today in a 3-2 Pirates victory.... so there's that. Regardless, I'm all for taking the chains off broadcasters and hearing their true feelings on players instead of faux niceties all the time.  Just imagine how much more entertainment we would all get in a world where baseball broadcasts could be turned into the EPL FanZone. Locke, Pirates Eke Out 3-2 Win Over Reds to Avoid Sweep

Jeff Locke has reduced his season FIP from 4.47 to 3.77 over the last two months. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Jeff Locke does not suck. I wrote two months ago that Locke would not continue to dominate as he dominated the early part of the season. What he has done in those two months surprised me: he kept pitching to prevent runs. Locke’s winning performance in the Pirates’ 3...

Pirates Have Four in John Sickels’ Mid-Season Top 50 Prospects

John Sickels says that Tyler Glasnow is among the best pitching prospects in baseball. John Sickels released his mid-season top 75 prospects this week. The Pittsburgh Pirates had four players on the list, with all four appearing in the top 50. Jameson Taillon, Gregory Polanco, Alen Hanson, and Tyler Glasnow all made the list. Taillon was first on the list, coming in at number 10...

Pittsburgh Pirates: Salvaging series 300% better than sweep

(Follow me on Twitter @jim_krug; opening image Garrett Jones; image credit tumblr) #lockedown; image credit zimbio Just a quick perspective in the wake of SP Jeff Locke and some timely hitting salvaging the series finale of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ second-half opener against the pursuant Cincinnati Reds… 1.  By my crude math, winning 1 game out of 3 is 300% better than falling...

Pirates Strand More Runners in 5-3 Loss to Reds

Russell Martin had two hits, including one of the solo homers, in the Pirates’ losing effort. (Photo Credit: David Hague) Losing in Cincinnati does not harm Pittsburgh’s playoff chances as much as one might think. The Reds and Pirates are still on a collision course for the NL Wild Card Playoff (43% chance this is the Coin Flip Game matchup), and even after a loss the Bucs are...

Minor League Schedule: Ten Games On Tuesday’s Schedule

They will make the game up as part of a doubleheader today. West Virginia was rained out last night. They will make the game up today as part of a doubleheader. Jamestown was rained out. The game will not be made...

Waiver Wire 7/22: Sportin' Charlie Morton

Finddog822 (via Flickr) Heading into our first full week of action after the All Star Game, we'll scour the wire for some helpful additions to your fantasy lineup. This week our picks include a recent call-up in Jonathan Villar, an old favorite from the Seattle Mariners who's en fuego, and the boring but surprisingly effective Charlie Morton from the Pittsburgh Pirates. I...

Prospect Watch: Allie Adjusting to High-A; McGuire With Two More Hits

TOP OF THE SYSTEM A look at how the current top 20 prospects did today.  Note that this list doesn’t include players currently in the majors. If a player is in the majors, he will be removed, everyone below him will be shifted up a spot, and a new player will be added to the bottom of the list. Rankings are from the mid-season rankings, and links on each name go to their Pirates...

Pirates 6, Nationals 5

Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of two-run homers to back a solid outing by right-hander Charlie Morton and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Washington Nationals 6-5 Monday night. McCutchen connected in the first inning and again in the third to stake the Pirates to a 4-0 lead. Both homers came off Dan Haren (4-11), who's 0-8 in 11 starts since May 9. Morton (2-2) gave...

Can The Pirates End Their Playoff, Losing Season Drought?

After spending a good amount of time at the top of the standings in the National League Central, that Pittsburgh Pirates finished the 1st half of the 2013 season right behind the St. Louis Cardinals. As disappointing as losing the divisional lead temporarily was, just the fact that they were 55-38 brings a smile to [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full...

Game 97: Pirates 6 Nationals 5

For eight innings it looked like this was going to be a nice, strong Pirate win. Then Jason Grilli served up a two-run homer to Jayson Werth and left the game three batters later, flexing his right forearm and that's all that anyone can think about. There's absolutely nothing that can be done about Grilli from here; we won't know an initial diagnosis until tomorrow, at...

Game 97: Pirates vs. Nationals Recap

Source: FanGraphs Tonight was a win for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the standings but it may have came at a huge cost. We’ll get to that part later. Tonight was the night of the long ball in Washington. The two teams combined for 11 runs and nine of them came via the home run. Andrew…

Reds 5, Pirates 4

Saturday’s loss undoubtedly ranks among the most frustrating of the year – possibly atop the list. In addition to the usual RISP failures (including a spectacularly awful display in the ninth inning), the pitching and defense was not up to snuff, and a few bad breaks really hurt them as well. It all ended in the second straight close, irritating loss to a rival on the road that...

Upgrading The Rotation For Zero Prospects

There is one way Neal Huntington could potentially upgrade the rotation without giving up any precious prospects.  It would take two things.  A lot of money and massive grapefruit sized balls. Before I get into the name I just want to stress how absolutely ballsy this move would be.  It would be so out of…

Bailey, Reds try for home sweep of Pirates

Homer Bailey has been very hittable since his no-hitter for the Cincinnati Reds. Jeff Locke seemingly has no physical problems to worry about as he brings baseball's best road ERA into this series finale. Bailey will pitch at home for the first time since his no-hitter as the Reds seek to complete a three-game sweep of the Pirates on Sunday. Bailey (5-8, 3.82 ERA) has posted...
