The big news swirling around the golf world the last week was the public revelation that Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn are in a relationship, with both athletes confirming the romance via Facebook announcements and some oddly intriguing photographs. To many it seemed rather strange that Woods, a fiercely private celebrity if ever there was one, would announce his budding romance with Vonn in such a public forum. But if there’s anything we’ve learned over the years about Eldrick Woods, it’s that the man always has a plan when it comes to his public persona (except when he’s fleeing from his enraged wife brandishing a 9-iron on a cool Thanksgiving evening). Said Woods at a press conference prior to the Arnold Palmer Invitational (via CTV News)… “Well, it’s very simple,” Woods said Wednesday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. “We’re very happy where we’re at, but also we wanted to limit the ‘stalkarazzi’ and all those sleazy websites that are out there following us. I’ve had situations where it’s been very dangerous for my kids and the extent they’ll go to. We basically devalued the first photos. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is in our society right now, and we felt like it was the best thing to do. I’m very happy about it.” Stalkarazzi? What are the odds that Woods came up with that clever play on words on his own? I can see Tiger’s point, in that there are times when it pays off to beat the TMZs of the world to the story, just to quell any unfounded and potentially damaging rumors. Still, if he thinks this will keep the stalkarazzi from hounding him and Vonn relentlessly during the course of their relationship, I think his plan may end up backfiring horribly.
