Tiger Woods left Augusta National on Friday afternoon just 3 strokes back from the leader.  When he returned on Saturday morning he learned that he would be penalized 2 strokes for an illegal drop on the 15th hole, pushing him to 5 shots behind the leader. This news sparked various reactions from all over the sports world.  Many of the traditionalist golfers were infuriated that Tiger wasn’t disqualified for signing a false scorecard at the end of the round.  Other people were happy that finally a rule was in place that protected the players from the odd rules of golf.  And casual viewers, like myself, were just happy that we could watch Tiger play for 2 more days. How this whole thing took place was very backwards and weird.  Tiger first took a shot that bounced off of the flag and went into the lake.  Tiger went back and dropped the ball 2 yards from the spot where he had hit the previous shot.  A TV viewer called in and told the people at Augusta that Tiger had broken a rule by not placing the ball as close as he possibly could to the previous spot.  The tournament rule people decided that Tiger didn’t break the rule and let it go. After Tiger’s round he had a TV interview where he said that he purposely placed the ball 2 yards back from the spot where he had previously hit.  This forced the hand of the rulers to take action on the situation.  After a hard debate on whether to disqualify Tiger, they decided to just assess him with a 2 stroke penalty and let him play out the weekend. Tiger hasn’t won a major championship since 2008 and it was looking like this could be the time to break his slump.  It will be very hard for Tiger to fight back from the 5 stroke deficit but if there is anyone in golf that can do it, it is Tiger Woods. Here is a video of the controversial drop-ball:
