PLAYERS: Travis Wood
TEAMS: Chicago Cubs
Yeah, I know.Is Travis Wood a mirage? Can he keep this up for his whole career? How about I don't care. This guy has been nothin' but fun to watch pretty much all year, and after yesterday... well, some day he'll be able to say to his grand kids he hit a homer off Tim Lincecum.During the Great Rebuild, there have been pockets of baseball action and some new players that allow me to not think about the how-long-til-the-Cubs-can-contend thing and just enjoy. And at the very bottom of it all, that's what summer is for.Okay, and maybe a frosty cold one.The Cubs sweep the Giants with back to back to back one-run wins.Doesn't really mean anything, but man was that fun.

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 7-28-13

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Oklahoma City RedHawks 4 Cubs outhit the RedHawks 9 to 7 in this one. Mike Olt went 0-4 with a strikeout, and Logan Watkins went 0-5. Watkins has a .508 after the ASB and a .556 OPS since July. Hopefully he gets back on the train soon, because Alcantara is not far behind him as 2Bs go (though the way is relatively clear at CF). Jae-Hoon Ha, seemingly forgotten...

Sveum: Samardzija deal 'not realistic'

Chicago Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija has shrugged off trade rumors and manager Dale Sveum said Sunday that any rumor about his right-hander being dealt is “silly.” Yet the Cubs listened to Arizona when the Diamondbacks asked their asking price for Samardzija and other teams have inquired as well. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heymnan wrote the only reason the Cubs “are looking around...

Top Ten List: Who is Junior Lake Waving Off?

Junior Lake played left field in today’s Cubs victory over the Giants (which incidentally capped off a sweep).  He got to make a couple of plays, and at one point he waved somebody off.   I think Junior Lake likes to just wave off the potential idiot fan who might interfere with him in LF. — Rice Cube (@CubicSnarkonia) July 28, 2013 Who could he be waving off?  There are no...

Series Preview: Milwaukee Brewers (43-61) at Chicago Cubs (48-55)

I've been out of the country for the last two weeks so I didn't catch any games, since they were all on at 2 AM or so. I feel SK's pain. I did catch the last few innings of last night's game and was amused to hear Len and JD talking about how this is the first time in a while that the team has been only seven games below .500. Silver linings I guess. They have played...

Schierholtz homer gives Cubs 1-0 win over Giants

The Cubs and Giants were locked in a scoreless duel into the ninth inning when Nate Schierholtz homered off his former teammate Sergio Romo to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. "Another one" manager Dale Sveum said. "Same game every night." Except this time the Cubs didn't blow it. It was their first 1-0 win over the Giants in San Francisco since May 8 1985 when...

A snapshot of how depressing the Cubs are

Sitrick had a nice tweet about how Starlin Castro (I first typed Stalin Castro and really thought about keeping it) leads the team among qualified Cubes in batting average. I wanted to see how that stacked up this year, and found that Castro is 29th among team-leaders. Adeiny Hechavarria is 30th and the only Marlin with enough PA to qualify. Name Team G PA AVG Miguel Cabrera...
