For the very first time in his EPL career, Jonathan Walters looked longingly to the heavens and wished earnestly that he could just stop scoring goals.
You see, after you send two of the opposition’s crosses into the back of your own net, you start realizing that you are only one accidental ****** away from earning the utterly humiliating “own-goal hat trick” milestone… and that’s definitely a feat no player strives to be in contention for.
Well, (possibly even more unfortunately for Walters) it seems his no-goal-scoring wish was eventually granted, because when he finally stepped up to a scoring opportunity on the correct end of the field (for a pk vs. Chelsea’s Petr Cech), he sent his attempt careening off the crossbar and firmly into the Premier League’s top nominees for worst ever match day performance.
As you can imagine, the Twittersphere had a few thoughts:
(That last one was actually said before the match. I guess those “other qualities” worked out pretty well for Chelsea…)
