Patrick Ewing and Michael Jordan, whose rivalry largely defined NBA basketball in the 1990s, were once almost teammates on the North Carolina Tar Heels. The reason it didn’t happen? Ewing told Dan Patrick on his radio show earlier this morning that a KKK rally during his visit to Chapel Hill made him hesitant.
From the Dan Patrick Show:
“I was close,” he said. “North Carolina was a very good school, but you know, when I went down there they put me in that Carolina Inn and there was a big Ku Klux Klan rally in North Carolina when I was there. And I’m like, you know what, I’m not coming down here.”
Ewing ultimately wound up at Georgetown, where he won a national title under John Thompson. Still, one wonders how many the tandem of Jordan and Ewing could have brought home.
