Found August 31, 2013 on MLB Injury News:
San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley has been sidelined since exiting Tuesday’s game with back stiffness. That remained his status for Friday’s weekend opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he told reporters – including Corey Brock of MLB.com – that his back has improved considerably over the past few days. "It's felt better both days [Thursday and Friday]. It's improved," Headley said Friday before the Padres faced the Dodgers in the first game of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium. Manager Bud Black concurred with his third baseman, telling reporters that Utley has been showing positive signs of recovery. While the skipper initially thought Headley would be out for nearly a week as a result of the back injury, it now looks like he could return sooner than later. "Chase is doing better and has made a nice recovery in the last 24 hours," Black said. "A couple of days ago, I thought it might be three, four, five days. But he's in a good frame of mind." Headley was able to take early batting practice in the cage Friday in addition to fielding ground balls. This would seem to indicate that the third baseman will be back in the Padres’ starting lineup at some point this weekend. Black indicated that he could return as soon as today. Padres Activate Blanks; Option Bass; Alonso, Headley Day-to-Day

After a seven-week hiatus due to an Achilles tendon injury, Padres outfielder Kyle Blanks has been recalled from the 15-day Disabled List and will be in tonight’s starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26 year old outfielder has been sidelined with the injury since Mid-July after being placed on the DL. Blanks was having a pretty solid season with the Padres before...

The beginning of MLB’s September callups have already started and The Padres’ first moves come in the form of a pitcher and a backstop. General Manager Josh Byrnes announced today that left-handed pitcher Tommy Layne and catcher Chris Robinson would be joining the club in Los Angeles, just in time for the final game in a three-game set against the Dodgers. Layne, 28, made his...

Padres pull Chase Headley back after he was claimed on waivers

In the waining days of the revocable waiver period, the San Diego Padres decided to yes the waters with their third baseman, Chase Headley.  Headley was claimed, but apparently the Padres either had no intention of ever making a deal or they did not want to make a deal with the team that did the claiming. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Padres will not trade Headley...

Players of the month: August

Hitter of the month: RF – Will Venable August totals:  367/395/697 – 4 HR, 9 2B, 20 RBI This one was pretty easy.  The guy who has been frustrating Padre fans for half a decade with his superb talent and a dearth of consistency has finally been consistent.  In fact, Venable has been about the only Padre who can make that claim in 2013.  With the exception of a rough middle...

Padres place & then revoke Chase Headley off waivers

The San Diego Padres placed third baseman Chase Headley on revocable waivers and have indeed brought Headley back after a team had placed a claim for him. The team who claimed Headley is still unknown by the media, but regardless he will remain with the Padres through the end of this season. Headley had been rumored to be traded after both the club and himself had performed at a...

Padres' Ross strikes out 10 in 2-1 loss to Dodgers

Tyson Ross is using the final month of the season to show the San Diego Padres what he can do. The right-hander struck out a career-high 10 in five innings of a 2-1 loss to Los Angeles on Sunday that gave the Dodgers their first sweep of the Padres this season. San Diego was limited to its fewest hits in the three-game series after getting 11 on Friday and 10 on Saturday. The Padres...

While You Were Drinking: Game 135 (SD vs LAD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. The Padres wasted a brilliant pitching performance from Andrew Cashner in a 2-1 loss to the Dodgers. Cashner gave up just 1 run in 7 innings on 10 hits with 7 K’s, while flirting with 100 mph all night. Yasiel Puig did some Yasiel Puig...

Edinson Volquez’s Place in Padres History

The Edinson Volquez era finally ended on Tuesday, when the Padres released the erratic right-hander three days after designating him for assignment. A lot went wrong during his nearly two seasons in San Diego after coming over from the Reds as part of the package for Mat Latos. Pitching coach Darren Balsley noted that Volquez overthrew in games, which “led to mechanical breakdowns...

Stults, Bass tagged as Padres lose to Dodgers 9-2

The San Diego Padres were unable to contain the Los Angeles Dodgers' leadoff and cleanup hitters. As a result, Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez made it a rough night for starter Eric Stults and reliever Anthony Bass. Puig had four hits and two stolen bases after getting benched in his previous game, and Gonzalez hit a pair of two-run homers to help send the Padres to a 9-2 loss...

Padres get 10 hits in 2-1 loss to Dodgers

Andrew Cashner allowed one run in seven innings, a solid performance that wasn't enough to get the San Diego Padres a win. They lost 2-1 to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday night despite 10 hits, one fewer than they produced in a 9-2 defeat in the series opener. ''It was a battle on both sides,'' Cashner said. ''If a couple of ground balls go a different...

Daily Friar 9.1.13

A day after the Dodgers shelled the Padres, they decided to put up more of a fight this time. Unfortunately they were unable to grab the win in the process despite a solid pitching effort from Andrew Cashner. Both starters in the game essentially matched each other as both Cashner and Chris Capuano pitched seven innings and struck out seven while giving up one run. The Padres bullpen...

Daily Friar 8.31.13

Former Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez made his presence known in last night’s game with two 2-run homers in route to a 9-2 Dodgers victory. For the Padres, outfielder Will Venable continued to add to his hit total in August with his 40th of the month. Second baseman Jedd Gyorko racked-up his 22nd double of the season, which ranks third among all rookies. Arizona’s A.J....

While You Were Drinking: Game 134 (SD vs LAD)

Sometimes things get a little fuzzy after a night in the pub. Here’s a friendly reminder of what you might have missed while you were drinking. The Padres started their final series in Los Angeles of 2013 with a disappointing — but not surprising — 9-2 loss to the Dodgers last night. Eric Stults pitched okay, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits with no walks & 3 K’s in 5.1 innings...

Adios, Tucson Padres

When my family moved from Oceanside to Tucson in 1991 the Diamondbacks were years away from existing and for a displaced Padres fan I was 8 hours away from professional baseball. Except for the Tucson Toros, at the time the affiliates of the Houston Astros. They played their games at Hi Corbett Field (famously used in the beginning of “Major League”) which is centrally located...
