The U.S. Postal Service is destroying thousands of stamps due to allegations from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition that a few of the activities on the stamps are “unsafe.” The stamps depict a variety of youthful sporting activities, from baseball to gymnastics. An entire press run of the new stamp series — inspired by Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign — will trashed by the cash-strapped USPS, according to Linn's Stamp News, a leading journal for collectors. The PCFS&N, however, is concerned that some of these images are not safe for people to put on envelopes as they might encourage risky behavior. The council ended up objecting to three specific stamps which show young kids doing a “cannonball dive” into a pool, a picture of someone “skateboarding without knee-pads,” and a picture of a person doing a “headstand without a helmet.” Handstand without a helmet? The government apparently has no problem with the batter without a batting helmet. Remember when the only danger kids faced with stamps was getting paper cuts from licking the things. Even in an overprotective society today's kids still face more danger just walking to corner mailbox.
