The Fighting Illini women's tennis team (4-1) will return to Urbana this Friday to take on SMU (0-0) at 5 p.m. CT. Illinois is 2-0 at Atkins Tennis Center this season and has not lost a singles or doubles match at home, capturing a pair of 7-0 victories during its last homestand.

The Fighting Illini football program signed 19 football players to scholarships Wednesday. New coach Tim Beckman is pleased with his group despite problems resulting from the lateness of his hiring. He spoke at length about his new class Wednesday.
The Fighting Illini football team struggled with its special teams last season. Fans studying statistics were alarmed at the poor results and clamored for a special team coach capable of reversing the results. It appears their wishes are coming true. Among the new UI staff members is Tim Salem, running back coach and special team coordinator. He knows what he's doing.

At this point, the Fighting Illini basketball team is bringing in only one new player for next year, point guard Michael Orris. But there may be more help on the way in the person of Devin Langford. The Alabama product is redshirting due to multiple injuries this year, but his skill level and long-term potential are excellent.

Fifteen members of the Fighting Illini swimming and diving team will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., for the second weekend in a row to compete in the Minnesota Challenge, Feb. 3-4. The women will compete in three sessions during the course of the weekend, beginning at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Six members of the Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team, including seniors Tyler Mizoguchi, Paul Ruggeri and Anthony Sacramento, junior Austin Phillips and freshmen C.J. Maestas and Michael Wilner, will compete at the 2012 U.S. Winter Cup Challenge.
