Cardinals righthander Adam Wainwright hadn’t won a game for nearly a month. But he still is tied for the National League in wins at 14 after a dominant seven-inning 11-strikeout performance against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Wainwright winless in four starts since July 21 was the staff ace he had been for much of the season raising his record to 14-7 and his mark at Wrigley Field to 6-0 in a 6-1 victory in the rubber game of the three-game series.
"That was as good as he’s been all season" said manager Mike Matheny. "His curveball was as sharp as we’ve seen it.
"He went through a little lull but today it looked like the normal Wainwright."
Jon Jay provided most of the offense driving in four runs including three on a home run off lefthander James Russell in the seventh inning. Russell had held lefthanded batters to a .181 average without a home run this year.
The lefthanded-hitting Jay had been hitting .198 against southpaws.
