Before the season began Washington Redskins' coach Mike Shanahan was in hot water. In his third season with the team pressure is on to produce some wins. Now more than halfway through the 2012 season, that pot of hot water is now boiling over.At 3-6 overall the Redskins are floundering. They started out the season strong. Preseason reviews of rookie quarterback Robert Griffin, III were promising. In Week 1 they pulled out a 40-32 win over Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints.Things have been going downhill since then. One might expect them to lose to the New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers and the undefeated Atlanta Falcons and they did. But Washington has also lost to some very beatable teams.31-28 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Rams.38-31 setback thanks to the Cincinnati Bengals.21-13 loss to the struggling Carolina Panthers. In addition, Coach Shanahan and his son, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, have exhibited some questionable play-calling decisions. I applaud their aggressive efforts in the NFL draft to trade up and acquire Griffin, III.He’s young and he’ll improve. The way they are using him at times, though, is dangerous and unwise. Having already suffered one concussion this season, they placed him as a wide receiver for one play against the Steelers and he got knocked in the head a second time. As the ESPN Monday Night Crew would say, “C’mon Man!” What were the Shanahan’s thinking? The younger Shanahan has been in some hot water of his own this season. In September he was fined $25,000 by the NFL for verbally abusing the replacement referees. His unprofessionalism and his poor play calling are two solid reasons the father should fire the son.It may not be much longer before the father gets fired as well. Much of the Redskins’ remaining schedule is filled up with tough divisional match-ups. They play the Giants again and must battle the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys twice. In addition they host the tough Baltimore Ravens. Things could get uglier than an aging starlet without her makeup. And if and when they do, Shanahan’s pot of scalding hot water is going to leave him and his employment status burned.
