Keys to a Seahawks victory This is one of those Seahawks games that scare me.  The Rams have lost starting quarterback Sam Bradford for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL and must start backup Kellen Clemens.   Clemens will be starting for the 13th time in his 9-year career. Heading into Monday night’s game he has a career record of 4-8 as a starter, including a 0-3 record for the Rams. The Seattle Seahawks will be looking to extend his losing streak. . . . . .They will if they can follow a few simple rules. 1) Do not get over-confident. The Seahawks are arguably the best team in the NFC while the Rams are arguably the worst, especially without Sam Bradford. There is every reason to be confident going into the game but they must realize that any team can beat you on Sunday, or in this case Monday, if you don’t take them seriously. 2) Ball Security The Seahawks need to do a better job protecting the football.  Russell Wilson is currently on pace to tie the team record for fumbles in a season set by Dave Krieg in 1989.  That season the Seahawks went 7-9, but this years club is already 6-1 and should get their 7th victory of the season tonight. Russell isn’t the only player who is having trouble holding onto the ball. Lately Marshawn Lynch has been fumbling at an uncharacteristic rate. (2 is to many in my opinion) There is no reason for the Seahawks to get fancy on Monday night. 3)  Keep it simple and execute There is no reason for the Seahawks to get fancy on Monday night.  They should have no problem lining straight up against the Rams and dominating on both sides of the ball. Before the season I expected the Rams defense to be in the top half of the league.  Instead they are ranked nearer to the bottom than they are the top. That means the Seahawks just need to play within themselves to secure a victory.  Above, I spoke about the offense holding onto the ball but it goes deeper than that.  They need to limit procedural penalties.  Far too many Seattle drives are stalled due to a false start or other procedural issues. There is no need for that against St. Louis, they just need to play solid football. They also need to stay on track from down to down.  Picking up 2 or three yards on first and second down is okay, losing 2 or three yards is not.  Losing yardage is how the team ends up getting into 3rd and long situations and putting themselves on the wrong side of a 50% 3rd down conversion rate. On defense the Seahawks just need to stay assignment correct.  Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn shouldn’t even need to disguise anything. The defensive players just need to avoid trying too hard and getting themselves out of position.  His defense is far more talented than the Rams offense. LOB With Kellen Clemens in at quarterback the Legion of Boom should have a good day, to say the least. The Seattle secondary is going to be a big issue for the Rams because they don’t run the ball very well. In-fact only the Falcons, Giants and Jaguars averaging less yards per game on the ground than the Rams. This is one of those weeks where the biggest fear is over confidence.  It should be easy for the Seahawks to finish out the first half of the season 7-1 but if they don’t come to play the Rams could steal one. The Hawks will come off their mini-bye and not make the mistake of playing lethargic like they did last year in the Miami sprinkler game. Fortunately the Seahawks next opponent, the Vikings, are not a very good football team so there is no reason for the Seahawks to be looking past the Rams.
