The last thing the Chicago White Sox need right now is a matchup with Kansas City Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie. The right-hander has completely shut down Chicago since being acquired by the Royals last summer, and he'll look to add to the visiting White Sox's woes in the opener of a three-game series Friday night. Guthrie came to Kansas City in a deal for left-hander Jonathan Sanchez on July 19, and he's gone 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in six starts against the White Sox. The Royals have won all six games, and Guthrie has allowed one run over 15 innings in winning both outings this season. He pitched a four-hitter in his first career shutout in the last matchup May 4, walking one in a 2-0 victory in Kansas City. "He's been tough on us," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "First, because he's good. ... He seems to pick it up when we're facing him. ... You have to pick your poison, you go after him early and then you pop it up. He's tough.&q...

Royals continue to wage the 'War on Walks'

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Among Royals fans and bloggers, it is a phenomenon known as the Royals' "War on Walks." For years now, decades even, the Royals have been one of the worst teams in baseball at drawing bases on balls. In fact, the last time the Royals finished in the top half of the American League in walks was 1989. Far more common has been the Royals finishing...

Orlando Calixte could be deadline trade chip

by John Viril— Coming into the 2013 season, Baseball America rated 21-year-old SS Orlando Calixte the 9th best prospect in the Kansas City system. Promoted to AA NW Arkansas to begin 2013, Calixte struggled early in the season. He hit .198/.244/.296 for a paltry .540 OPS in April. Since that rough beginning, Orlando Calixte has progressively improved the last two months. He hit...

Chicago White Sox bats make some noise in win

The Chicago White Sox kicked off their series in Kansas City with a powerful 9-1 win. Coming off the heels of a sweep at the hands of the Twins, the  White Sox (30-41) were able to roll over Royals’ starter Jeremy Guthrie as they established an early lead. Guthrie walked three of the first five Sox hitters. Paul Konerko patiently drew a walk to bring a run home and Conor Gillaspie’s...

White Sox Great Carlos "El Caballo" Lee Retires

Carlos Lee announced his retirement on Friday after 14 seasons in the Major Leagues with five different teams.  Lee spent 6 years with the White Sox and played more games for the Sox than any other team during his career. While he hasn’t donned the silver and black since 2004, Lee is fondly remembered for his time on the South Side and we look back at his Sox career...

Twins try to break spell against White Sox' Chris Sale

The Chicago White Sox's Chris Sale took another hard-luck loss last week despite delivering one of his most dominant performances. He hasn't needed much run support against the Minnesota Twins. Looking to snap a career-worst three-start losing streak, Sale tries to win a fourth consecutive outing versus Minnesota on Wednesday night. While Sale (5-5, 2.43 ERA) ranks among...

Heath Optioned to AAA, Omogrosso Recalled

In what’s surely to be the most groundbreaking move in Major League Baseball this season, the White Sox optioned Deunte Heath to AAA Charlotte after yesterday’s loss in Minnesota, and Brian Omogrosso was recalled to take his place in the bullpen. Ok, I’m being sarcastic. This is pretty insignificant when it comes to roster moves, as we are talking about a team basically...

Bruce Chen, Saber-Savvy Southpaw

Bruce Chen isn’t getting younger. The journeyman left-hander — currently with the Kansas City Royals — celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday. Since signing out of Panama, in 1993, he has made 365 big-league appearances. He has played for 10 teams. Chen has gotten smarter as he’s gotten older. He has long survived on guile, and in recent years, he’s developed an appreciation...

Lately the Royals offense is more lucky than good

After being ten games below .500 at one point, the Kansas City Royals made it to the .500 mark early this week before losing two in a row to the Cleveland Indians, falling to a 34-36 record. After the debacle of May, it’s good the see the Royals playing better baseball. But they’re not playing good enough to contend for the A. L. Central, much less be a playoff contending team...

Micah Johnson “Steals” His Way to MVP Honors in SAL All Star Game

Micah Johnson, Chicago White Sox prospect with the Class-A Kannapolis Intimidators, ”stole” the show in Tuesday’s South Atlantic League All Star Game in Lakewood, New Jersey (home of the Lakewood Phillies), leading the Northern Division in a 2-1 victory over the Southern Division that was shortened to seven innings due to inclement weather. In the third inning, Johnson stole...

June 18: Twins 7, White Sox 5

The White Sox traveled to Minnesota on Tuesday, and continued on what appears to be yet another abysmal road trip for the southsiders. They have now dropped 13 of their last 15 road contests, and five of their last six. Once again, falling back to ten games below .500. Axelrod Gets Knocked Around Early Dylan Axelrod came into today's start on seven days rest...

June 21: White Sox 8, Royals 1

If there was ever a game that ended with a strange, unexpected result, it was this game. Since joining the Royals, Jeremy Guthrie had a 0.40 ERA against the White Sox. But on Friday night, all bets were off as the offense came alive early and often. The first inning went as follows ... Alejandro De Aza walk Alexei Ramirez double Adam Dunn walk ...
