Six days from now the Orioles can expand their roster to 40. They may not use the 15 available roster spots as they nearly did last season but they’re likely to use more than a handful. With Norfolk still in a playoff race the Orioles don’t want to plunder the Tides but they’ll probably summon at least a few by Sunday. When Norfolk’s season ends they’ll bring up a few more and send others to Sarasota to be ready in case they’re needed. Here are five possible callups that are most intriguing: 1) Kevin Gausman There’s a chance Gausman will be called up before Sunday so he could be eligible for the postseason roster. Manager Buck Showalter is intrigued by the possibility of using Gausman’s possible innings as a reliever in the stretch and if the Orioles qualify the postseason. Gausman showed some promise earlier this season as a reliever and he has an excellent chance to be in the Orioles’ starting rotation next season even if some of his early starts were lacking. 2) Tsuyoshi Wada The Orioles have waited nearly two full seasons for Wada. He missed last season after Tommy John surgery and while Showalter predicted Wada would join the team in June he recovered much slower than expected. The Orioles didn’t have any room for Wada in their starting rotation earlier this year and Showalter thinks that as a reliever the Japanese left-hander would need an extraordinarily long time to warm up. If the Orioles fall out of contention he could get a start or two and could be a long reliever. Wada is probably auditioning for a job somewhere else in baseball next season. 3) Henry Urrutia Urrutia was sent down to make room for additional pitching help. In his first stint Urrutia didn’t hit badly but showed little power and far too much aggressiveness. The Orioles want to see if he can be their primary designated hitter for next year. It would help if he could show that he was an adept outfielder. He hasn’t yet.
