It was a night of missed opportunities for the Arizona Wildcats. Hopelessness, too. And, oh yes, missed field goals, fourth-down tries, stilted offense and a tired defense. Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez called his team's offensive performance "embarrassing" just a week after UA had beaten visiting South Carolina 56-0. Arizona's laundry list of calamities will be included in Sunday's uniform laundry duties in preparation for next week's game with Oregon State in Arizona Stadium. What for 30-some minutes looked like the makings of potential cozy upset for the Cats turned into a crazy, frustrating defeat to the No. 3 Ducks. Upset special? Hardly. Oregon ran away with a 49-0 victory over the now 3-1 Wildcats, ending their win streak at five. Oregon's average win over Arizona in the last four meetings had been 50 points. "It's embarrassing," Rodriguez said in his postgame radio show. "Our execution offensively was embarrassing. We have to be able to finish drives (and) kick a field goal. Our defense played its tail off for the most part. I'm just embarrassed because we did such a poor job as coaching getting this offense to finish drives." The red zone turned into the dead zone for Arizona, going 0 for six on Saturday night. Does defeat and disappointment come any easier to explain? It's Arizona's first shutout defeat since losing 33-0 to Nebraska in the 2009 Holiday Bowl. And it's UA's worst defeat by points since No. 3 Washington defeated UA 54-0 in 1991. It's UA's first conference shutout since it lost 38-0 to California in 2004. Arizona, after three consecutive home victories, found out what the road is all about. The exclamation point just came at the hands of the Ducks, a team that could move to No. 2 in the polls after No. 2 Louisiana State's narrow 12-10 win over Auburn. For Arizona, likely to fall from the rankings, it'll be good to be home after the road was too intimidating to overcome. How else could you explain it? No. 3 Oregon, rarely a team that leaves a lot on the field for an opponent, did just that Saturday night in Autzen Stadium. At least in the first half, it did. Oregon's Quack Attack was, well, a bit out of whack. Fumbles. Dropped balls. And an uncharacteristic lack of big plays. (More later, much more later). What's the point of having opportunities if a team can't take advantage? Still, credit Arizona's defense, one where just six weeks ago was considered non-existent. Who would have thought UA's defense would have held the Ducks' high-powered offense to just 13-0 first half points? Arizona was within touching distance of a chance to keep it close. It at least had hope at halftime. "If we would have finished (a couple of those drives) inside the 25 (in the first half) we probably would have had the lead," Rodriguez said. "And we had the ball (to start) the second half. We just had to execute better. It just wasn't there." Arizona had five turnovers, including four interceptions. Two were returned for touchdowns. For some of the game, Arizona turned what was to have been a Ping-Pong match into a scrum. It was also to blame for the mess, too. The worst was Arizona couldn't capitalize on five early-game possessions -- two missed field goals and red zone attempts -- and it provided the Ducks just enough wiggle room to create a gap.... Then explode. And all the Ducks needed was that tiny space to eventually turn the doubt into a rout. Oregon scored 36 second-half points making it clear Arizona may have come a long way to this point but it's clearly nowhere near Oregon when it comes to national scope. For nearly three quarters both teams played like it was football on skates. Then all of a sudden the Ducks found their footing -- big shocker there -- and they were off to the races. Oregon had big play after big play, but that's more accustomed to how Oregon performs. The Wildcats were in bend-but-don't-break mode all night. And it looked for a moment it might be able to hang around... until the Cats' defense broke; getting tired and Arizona's offense got careless and, well, stayed ineffective.
